IIRC from flight school, as little as around 10 G laterally can tear the aorta (abdominal aorta is most susceptible, I think).
If that happens you don't survive, regardless of external injuries or the lack thereof.
Abdominal aorta has a bit of anchoring, kidneys. The ascending aorta, leaving the heart is susceptible to rupture in an accident. Its the knuckle you see on chest xray.

I hope this helps y'all.

That said, may he rest in peace. Very sad to hear this happen to anyone. Could be just bad luck or like trying to avoid an animal.

My deepest condolences to his surrounding circle of friends and family.

Sad to hear. Wondering since the majority of the impact seems to be on the roof, would a CF roof have made a difference?

!00% for sure he was in MDM mode or nannies off. A nannied M2C doesn't slide the way this M2C did. Trust me. Then car would have been heading head first straight into the trees and not 90/180 or whatever degrees sliding like this car did....

Clickbait CNN article. The actual article doesn't really say that. It just says they're trying to put out an autonomous driving car with collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, etc. by 2020. That in no way guarantees people aren't going to die in them.

This exactly.

But with all nannies on, the car stays on rails so to speak. But you still will have to brake for slower corners/turns(doh)

In the past a couple of Volvo crash avoidance demonstrations went wrong:

Difficult moment for the guy in charge of the demo presentation from 00:43 onwards:

Maybe the worst ingredients for a very fast and not focused drive.
Don't forget turbo motor - can be Jekyll and Hyde - lag/low power zone followed by hell unleashed when turbo kicks in. Easy to oversteer if not careful, especially wet roads.

So apparently he overtook another car and somehow got off the road during a corner. He counter steered and the article claims that's why the car started to drift and, after around 70 meters, hit 2 trees directly on the driver's side. Through that enormous impact the car was then tossed back over the street and came to a standstill on a meadow after about 40 meters.

RIP.
Accidents will happen no matter how carefully you drive.

I have really no idea what happened to this poor M2C owner.

By respecting the speed limits and by avoiding drinking and driving, you generally reduce the risk of dying while driving by 50%.

But bad luck can still happen. Drive safely.

Let’s face it folks, yes, 400hp is a lot. Supercars 20 years ago disn’t perform like this current era of sports cars, and newer cars are a lot safer. Physics always wins, so toss the mdm comments out the window.

The dearly departed could’ve had a heart palp or minor stroke that could’ve caused the wreck for all we know.

This makes the front page because of the car of course, but too many people deserve an “rip” on a daily basis.

Life is short. Respect it dearly.

Besides the oddity of a 55-year old driving an M2.., this was simply the case of an unfortunate impact. Damage is not even bad, so I would expect the protection of the vehicle to work as planned.
Either the safety parameters are subpar (unlikely) or it was just the driver's time to go. As some1 mentioned earlier, you can trip, crick your neck & be dead.

Driver was the sole occupant and all appropriate airbags deployed (thorax and head). The images were taken after those and part of the seat cover had been cut away to remove the deceased. It appears he was impaled by a tree limb from what I can see.

Sad news indeed.

Just remember folks... when in a spin... LOOK where you want to Go! Not at what you are about to HIT! Because IF you look at that tree(or what ever)... that's what you will hit!

I remember talking to the instructors at Summit Point many moons ago... they told me that's why Cops bug out when your searching in your car for your reg and insurance AND you don't break eye contact. They know your going for a gun. Just some words of advice.

RIP M2C driver. Btw... the driver was a high level manager for BMW AG. Makes the news even more sadder.
