788M Wheel Weight Confirmation?

Hello All,
Someone asked if I would weigh my 788 wheels, since I had the car up in the air it wasn't a big hassle. I'm sure some people won't be happy with the results. These weights were done on a bathroom scale with the tires on there so I know it's not 100% accurate. The front wheels came in at 49 lbs and the rear at 52.8 lbs. I put them on more than once and they came back with the same result. However, I put a 12lbs weight on as a control and it came back as 12.2lbs consistently. So there may be a 1.6% variability. I'm guessing the TPMS contributes very little weight.

Tire Rack says the front tires weigh 23.0lbs and the rear tires weigh 26.0lbs.

That would put the front wheels at 26lbs +/- .416lbs. (Accounting for variability)

Rear wheels at 26.8lbs +/- .4288lbs (accounting for variability)

Apparently it is almost impossible to take a picture of the reading on the scale but trust me it was 49 and 52.8lbs

This by know means scientific with all the variables involved but just wanted to give people an idea.

Pretty heavy for 19" wheels. 763Ms not only will reduce significant unsprung weight but also will look better too. I wonder how much I can sell this wheel set for.

Also, I found out BMW don’t have traditional wheel studs? A lot of this is new to me.

Yeah, tightening the lug (bolts) is a bit more tricky than lug (nuts).

That's honestly not to bad at all for how wide they are.
Shit my VW I was so happy that my Pretoria wheels weighed around 22 lbs at 19" i was amazed considering how much the Cadiz 19" weighed about 27 lbs for the same dimensions.
For stocks these aren't half bad at all.

I agree, I think people are just perplexed that they weigh more than the previous 437’s from last year. The stock rims on my 2015 WRX weighed over 25lbs and they were 17 x 8. I have a set of CR rims for my s2000 and I think the rears are like 26 or 27lbs and they are 17 x 8.5.

To the OP
If you still have the wheel off
Do you mind measuring the clearance of the inner barrel?
I want to know if my aftermarket wheel will clear the brakes

Thanks

Thank you very much for taking the time to weight them. It confirms what I was afraid of.
At least now it is clear

So it appears the BMW numbers are probably correct. We don't know how accurate the tire weights are and if they are the same for the BMW * spec, I think?

To make installing them easier, you can get various wheel pins/hangers that screw in and support the wheel while you thread a few bolts in.

E9x M3 and F8x M3/M4 both have heavier Competition wheels. It is what BMW does. In this case it is a result of the wheel design, more spokes equals more material/weight. In the end both wheel styles need replacing. 763M should be an option.

As someone who always gets aftermarket wheels, it is definitely a positive a lot of weight can be saved by just changing wheels. I would guess the 788m could pull at least $2k on secondhand market. Although heavier, a lot of people like to be different. Many 437m sets for sale.

The only problem with that is there are few winter tires available to fit the rear 10" correctly. Right now in the US the only tire that comes in stock sizes is the Pirelli Sottozero Serie II which is a very old tire. My plan was to run 4x front 437M or 4x front 359M and a 245 square setup.

Sure nothing is available? What size would be looking at for a winter tire?

I can check what we have available here in Europe.

For stock sizes, 245/35/19 and 265/35/19 the old Sottozero II are the only available in the US that I can find. Maybe an old Continental also, TS830 P. The Sottozero 3 comes in 255 but that would be really stretched.

There might be better options for Europe. The BMW 641M winter set is an 8.5" wheel up front and 9" in the rear so you can go narrower. There are plenty of options if you run 245 square.

Those 788s are heavy. Wow. The 437s are lighter at 23 and 24 llbs (approximately), and the 763s are 20.9 and 21.7. I've got a set of the 763s on the way. BMWPartspros.com has them on sale right now. About 15 lbs lighter than my current set up.

Swap out the heavy BMW battery for one of these, and you'll save another 41 lbs.

Let me do a search...

OK I did a quick search here in Europe.

For the front I have found: Continental, Michelin, Nokian, Pirelli, Kumho and Hankook

For the rear I have found: Pirelli and Continental for the 265 width. There is a lot more choice in the 255 width, a lot more choice... Even brands I would never buy.

Personally I would go for a Nokian front and rear but the rear would be a 255. You think this does not fit? Would it be too much of a stretch?

255 on a 10" wheel is pretty stretched. It might be fine, but it's the absolute minimum you should run I am pretty sure.

On my wagon I run a 265 square setup on Apex 9.5" rims. Sits with a nice flat (vertical) sidewall. Those are MPSS.
