Why would anyone need an M2 to drive on the 405? Cars to be driven on the 405 should have their specs report 0-17 mph times, as that is about as fast as you can hope to go, except for maybe 2 am on a Monday morning . . . .

Love my MT

I debated whether to get the MT or DCT. I just came from a MK6 Golf R with a MT and loved the car, but just needed a change.

I drove both the DCT and MT and loved them both. But, I couldn’t bring myself to buying an automatic and probably regretting down the road not having a manual. As long as manuals are available, I’ll have one. It didn’t help that the 2 dealerships I visited suggested getting the manual because they felt they’d be more valuable. Probably BS, but I bought into it.

I absolutely love the Manual, and I find it shifts effortlessly, but I agree that reverse is a bit of a task. Recently I picked up an X2 with M Sport X package, so now I have Paddle shifters and it’s fun enough to drive with my 2 border collies and mtn bike. But, I don’t think one is better than the other. Don’t have regrets and just enjoy driving your car - it’s an awesome car.

I feel that the negative reputation of the 405 has been greatly exaggerated...

I've hit speeds of as high as 30... 35 miles at times!

All kidding aside, if you live in Los Angeles, the 405 is an unavoidable reality.

I have a solution for you; move!

Unfortunately, a huge proportion of your state is moving to my state, especially to Boise. Pretty soon we will be just like you!

We have the same problem with California influx.

Influx problem is a reality in most cities worldwide, some worst than others, no doubt DCT is a must in that case
My point was rather about DCT sport/sport+ being the best choice vs MT to ride the car in track or mountain roads
Few MT owners commented the electronic assistance making the manual feeling less optimal

Thanks for the video. I love a manual; even a Toyota Corolla it still makes any soulless car enjoyable.

I took some crap on other threads for suggesting just this. Autos have their place in this world but NOT in a small, toss-able, M car.

I still respect those who prefer an automatic (DCT); I wouldn't want them to break one of their press-on nails while shifting a lever.

Both are great options but after my last car had a dual clutch transmission that sucked a lot of the fun out of the car I was ready to get back to a manual.

Driving the DCT M2 at the Performance Center was great but I knew I made the right choice for myself once I got my 6MT car up into the Western NC mountains after taking delivery.

Personally I kind of miss the open vs. closed deck discussion....

I test drove both before buying the DCT. My complaint with the MT was the gearing. In 6th gear at 80mph (speed limit on most autobahns), the MT's rpms seemed to be revving very high. It felt like it needed another gear. So that is why I selected the DCT and I have no complaints.

Agree here. Test drives really felt like missing gear. Not the greatest for cruising but I guess this is not really a cruising type car.

This is a tough decision and a very personal choice. I'm not sure you can get the feeling of driving DCT regularly from a test drive unfortunately.

I have purchased 2 DCT cars now. They are fast and amazingly capable. But both of them I have gotten bored with after around 6 months.

I'm now trading my second DCT car going back to a 6MT M2

They are both great transmissions. I have the 6MT in my M5 and a 5MT in my Z3 roadster. I chose the DCT in the M2. No regrets.

I've been driving for a long time going back to the late 80's so the novelty of a manual transmission wore off a long time ago as I derive fun from acceleration, braking, and cornering not using my left foot and manually rowing gears so none of that matters to me. That said I've only owned two automatic cars in my adult life (EVO X MR and Golf R) and they both were DCT's. The DSG equipped Golf R happens to be my last car and I have to say after driving around in my M2 I don't mind the manual transmission even if the throws are a little on the long side but if I had to do it over again I may pony up the extra $$ for the DCT as I forgot how much a manual is a chore in traffic as my Golf R was effortless in day to day city driving.

Had a ‘17 M 2 with DCT and traded it for an ‘18 with manual. The DCT is quicker and a great transmisson , not quite as good as the Porsche PDK but good. I track a manual 911 so shifting is part of me. To be fair I auto x a PDK Spyder so there is a place for both . The M2 is my daily driver and I enjoy the involvement of shifting . Oh , I’m 76 so I learned early to row the gears

When I bought my 2016 Mini JCW back in 2015 I opted for the manual, but I would have gone for a DCT at the time, had they offered one, as I do a lot of highway and unfortunately stop-and-go, but I simply couldn't be sold on a non-DCT standard automatic (even if they call it "Sport-Automatic").
Fast forward, I ended up getting my M2 back in May 2018 as a MT and I really have not had any second thoughts, although I had the option of the DCT this time. The price difference was not the factor by the way. I absolutely love the MT and the engagement it provides. That said, the DCT is quicker, definetely more convenient in stop-and-go traffic, no doubt. Would I go for a DCT next time? Probably not. But it really depends on your preference and both have their benefits. Absolutely loved the M4 DCT I had rented in Germany two years back. But there I did a lot of Autobahn, where probably the DCT has an edge over the MT in some way. Pretty much a philosophical topic

Edit 28-Jul-2018: With or without the MPE flaps open, a manual downshift from 3rd to 2nd makes me smile every single time - very very satisfying

You would have LOVED the 6MT. I think the N55 is perfectly suited to the manual trans!

Very likely indeed! Just beat a C43 AMG up and down the Autobahn in Germany last week. Comes with a 9-Speed-Auto. Not quite as quick in shifting as BMW's 8-Speed-Auto, but pretty impressive (heavy monster though). Trend goes towards 9 and 10 gears non-DCT automatic, with shift times further reducing and through more gears more time in optimal rpm's, cutting down 0-60 times. Would not want to miss my MT though, even if slower
