M2 owners regrets for MT or DCT
I like to share with you guys a growing bad feeling about my choice made on gear box, I have a 18 M2 LCI with DCT which I use to ride mainly in sport mode in mountain roads, car has +5k km just made for fun and I love this car !!!
But (unfortunately) I am just wondering if I would have more control on power with MT, and here it comes; did I chose the right geat box despite DCT in sport mode is very quick ??? Some similar experiences? |

I have the DCT. My other M car was an E46 6 speed.
I don’t regret getting the DCT. It is a great transmission and is faster and gets better MPG than a 6 speed. In manual mode, you have the same control of power as a 6 speed. |

Never a second thot on this great DCT. Manuals all my life, but this is great. Manual if I wish, and in traffic, just a looooooot easier. I do not need a left leg to pump up and down to help spell enthusiast. Go for it...or sell it. The debate will never be done. The auto mags and ROUNDEL make sure of that. But love this DCT.

Like Dan, I'm coming out of an E46 M3 (well, not out as it's sitting in my garage).
When looking for that car, I wanted a manual but found the exact right car with SMG. I became a fan of that transmission real fast. I was surprised. When it was time to order my M2, I was DCT all the way. I couldn't be happier. This will always turn into a Mets v. Yankees type argument but if you read those threads (there are a million) a smart person will take away that it's a personal preference and be damn happy with what you have. And F the Yankees.

Both have their merits. We chose the 6MT, but I'm sure there will be days when I'm stuck in a traffic jam and think about how nice the DCT would have been. Plus the DCT gives the extra gear, which should make for a quieter ride at higher cruising speeds. The 6MT in the M2 is so smooth and easy to use, and I so infrequently drive in any kind of traffic that it's the right choice for us but I have no doubt that we'd have enjoyed the DCT if for some reason we'd had to go that route. Like a lot of things, it really depends on how you drive, where you drive, and what you want the car to do for you.

I believe DanG is correct. If your question truly is "more control on power", then I don't see why there should be any difference. However if you miss using your left leg, then you probably chose the wrong trans. |

Sweet, another MT vs DCT thread. I guess it's too early to be debating AWD vs RWD with snow tires.

One of the reasons I chose the M2 over many other cars when I was shopping around was the 6MT. It's the first car I buy, and also the first MT I own. I don't think you could get me to pick DCT over it, even if you paid me. And yes, I test drove both, hell, I could have had the DCT for cheaper and faster if I had gone with it, since there were already models at the dealership. I don't think I could ever buy an auto car ever again anymore, at least not for myself.

So if you have any doubts. Get a manual you won't be able to get Them forever! On the other hand you will have the rest of your life to pick up another automatic one. Best wishes. |

When in doubt, swap it out.
I certainly don't begrudge anyone for DCT choice - it's quite sporty & BOTH transmissions will likely be dead before me but if you have doubts about your choice - whatever it is - then I suspect you chose wrong. Yes indeed - like death and taxes...

Both are going to be dead soon. The main difference is that we are not going to move backwards in automatic transmission performance on the whole. DCT will eventually be in the dustbin of automotive history just like SMG, although with fonder memories. Even if they are not quite equal right now, the automatic boxes will eventually match and surpass DCT given the amount of development dollars put in.

On every forum, threads regarding MT vs DCT, I've never read a post were an MT owner truly regrets their decision. I've seen plenty of posts by both MT and DCT owners who love and swear by their choice. But I've only seen regrets posted by DCT owners.
