Start/Stop
anybody hear actually use this feature on the car? as I am about to daily drive this more, I am considering using it to save on gas.
On my wife's GLK350 and the leased m340i I have tried for the last year, it actually does notably save gas; but not sure how much it had to do with the autotrans vs a DCT with the n55. On a separate note, does anyone know if the n55 in the M2 have bearings with an anti-scuff coating to cope with start-stops? |

Most like myself have turned this feature off.
Long discussion here on the subject: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=2079704

It's trash, don't use it, it'll kill your engine faster because 90% of wear happens when you start the engine. Unless you don't care about the owner that keeps your car to 150K miles, then do whatever you want.
IMO, sorry for this, but if you're worried about gas at all you shouldn't be driving an M2. It's a necessary part of performance car ownership. I honestly wouldn't mind if gas was $10 a gallon, it'd literally make no difference to me at all. You have to pay to play. |

Its not so much the gas mileage because I think it is relatively great for this version of the n55 as opposed to the higher strung m-engines I have dealt with.
It is the god damn range which is my only beef with this car. I couldn’t fathom why they undersize the fuel tank on this platform. My commute each week is about 250 miles and at times it involves bumper to bumper traffic for about an hour which means weekly fill ups or sooner. Otherwise the car is almost perfect that I almost sold my e36 M3 if it weren’t for the range which btw gets close to 400 miles in range with its 16.7 gallon tank. |

Have never and will never use auto start/stop on any vehicle.
As ///MPhatic said, it’s a performance car. Complaining about fuel range and having a small gas tank just sounds like it’s the wrong car for what your intended use is. |

I turned it off of mine. I can’t imagine constantly turning the engine on and off is good for the engine

The tank is small. But it makes me wonder why you don't have a second car/daily driver for the long hauls, or at least some of them. I have an Exige as my toy, the M2 as my weekend/Dragon car, and an RDX as a daily/highway car and the combination works perfectly. |

I commute to work at least twice a week only (but 50 miles each way). I suppose my e36 is now my daily, or rather I alternate between that and an M2 for now. I happen to live in the ex-burbs so there is about 15 miles of canyons that I look forward to driving on with my bimmers that are the highlight of my commute after dealing with an hour and a half of traffic each way. So after a long gruling work day and nightmarish commute, the M cars are my therapy session (but not when it is interrupted by having to stop at a gas station occassionally) The range is a small nit pick but wanted to see if anyone had any real world experience using ASS because in the other cars I have tried it made a difference in range. But to everyone elses point here I will also not do so at the compromise of reliability; especially if the bearings do not have the Irox coating found in my wife’s glk350 or even the b58 m340i i had before. |

When I'm out on the backroads or in the canyons for a great drive: no way, stop/start is off! Stop-and-go traffic where I'm moving and stopping every handful of seconds: also no. But, on my commute to/from work where I'll likely be stopped at a stoplight for upwards of 45 secs at a time: yep! Based on a comment about stop/start I saw go by from the knowledgeable F87source, I guess I'm not so worried about extra wear from a handful of extra starts. Though I definitely avoid stopping/starting the engine every few seconds like would happen in stop-and-go traffic. Maybe I should be more worried, though…? Quote:

But for my own personal car auto start stop has been off since day 1.

Stop start is simply fitted to help pass the emissions cycle test. Its unsafe & a great way to prematurely wear components. The few bucks you ‘may’ save on fuel will easily be negated by premature component failure. Its garbage.

Coded it off..sometimes put it on manually if I predict longer times stationary and engine is nice and warm and I'm just pootling.
Otherwise I just can hear my dad saying it's not a clever idea... |
