Hi all,

I lay up my car for at least 2 (typically 4) months at a time during winter whilst the roads are salted. I have no ability to charge the battery where the car is parked (no power outlets), so in other cars in the past I have just disconnected the negative terminal and that's enough to see me through winter.

Problem with the M2 is that the battery is in the boot, AND there is no mechanical key lock for the boot.

So am I right in thinking that the process for locking up the car after disconnecting the battery, and accessing the car again, is as follows?:

* Open driver's door
* Open boot
* Disconnect negative terminal
* Close boot
* Close driver's door
* lock manually with key in driver's door

To open again:
* manually unlock driver's door with key
* open bonnet
* Use jumper pack on connection points to provide power to ECUs
* open boot using electrical release button
* re-connect negative terminal

Anything I'm missing? The whole thing of course hinges on the jumper pack being able to power the car adequately to open the boot.

I would lower the back seats so you have access to the boot. You can then use the boot release handle to open the boot.

What DanG said! Also:

1) do you have to lock the doors?

2) if you are going to disconnect the battery, why not remove it and put it on a charger...that way you know for sure it's good to go.

Yes have to lock the doors

I could remove the battery, BUT what I will typically do is if there is a break in the weather where there is rain which washes away the salt and temps are unusually high (>7 degrees), is take the car out for a run. So would be a bit of a faff taking the battery out and re-installing.

Good idea. I’ll have to check if mine has a boot release handle or if that is just a US thing!

Wouldn’t have worked in previous car due to roll cage, but the M2 doesn’t have one (yet)
