Battery question

Hey all!

So I am just passing 4 years ownership on my 2021 Comp. I have a tad over 21K on the clock.

Anyone know the life span of the original battery on these cars? Mine seems to be doing just fine with no issues but it would be nice to know when I can expect to replace it.

Bmw can test it and give you an accurate age. My PPI revealed on my 2020 the battery was at approximately 50% and i have 13k if that matters. I'd think you'll be fine another few years. Be glad the M2 didn't come with the lithium battery of our big brother F80.

Thanks!

That's actually really good to know because I was told they don't last very long by a mechanic (who probably just wanted me to spend money to get a new one).

I replaced mine at 7 years. Still wasnt dead but I was afraid it may fail this winter. Some have gone as far as 9 years.

2019 M2C here. I bought it new in Sept 2018. At 21k miles now and the battery is doing fine so far. So that's about 6.5 years. I have it on a CTEK smart charger at times, but so far anytime I've ever connected it, it has been almost fully charged already.

These are good Varta AGM batteries from the factory - plus protected from temp extremes due to being trunk-mounted. 5-10 years easily achieved. I’ll probably replace mine at 5 just to be safe.

Considering my car is garaged and I live in Southern California, I am probably doing just fine.

I’m on the original battery in my ‘18 M2 (Jan ‘18 build date). So that’s 7 years on this battery.

I have no experience/opinion on the OEM Lithiium in the F80/82's.

I do have 14 years experience with Anti Gravity LiPo's and they last, and weigh a fraction of their Lead Acid cousins.

They are more expensive but IMO worth it.

I ran one in my old EVO, my 2 RF Miata's, and now both my M2's.

There are other excellent brands out there as well, but I'm very pleased with the AG's I've used.

Their "Battery Tracker" WiFi app is also excellent.

For those that have had the battery for more then 3-4 year. Do you run dash cameras or upgraded sound systems?

No dash cams for me. And the sound system ( we’re talking about the exhaust, right? ) is also stock. But seriously, if I’m listening to anything in the car it’s only podcasts, so the stock H/K system is more than enough for me.

Keep it on a CTEK and you'll be fine for many, many years. Make sure when you do replace it that you register it properly.

My battery is from 2016 so 9 years now and it is still doing very well, iirc it is at 78% life. I maintain it every winter using a CTEK MUS7002 on snowflake mode - which has the correct charging voltage for an AGM battery.

How do you check battery life percentage? My battery is from 2018.

Bimmerlink, protool, or you can bring your battery to a auto parts store for free testing.

I was under the impression that Bimmerlink shows the current state of charge, not overall remaining battery life. In other words, it shows how much charge the battery currently holds, rather than how chemically degraded it is (how much life it has left). Is this the right way to think about it?

State of charge is related to battery health, if after a long drive the battery state of charge is only like 40%, your battery isn't healthy any more as it cannot accept a reasonable charge.

There are more ways to test it like with CCA etc, but that needs expensive equipment. But normally you can tell when your battery is on its way out with state of charge, and if it can hold a voltage.

here's what varta posts: https://www.varta-automotive.com/kno...--step-by-step

and here's what BMW talks about with state of charge and battery health: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1784234
