Replaced S55 charcoal & air filter w/ BMC

Now that I just had my break in service on my 20' M2C Iv been debating what to do outside of cosmetics. Not ready for a dp, tune or an exhaust but wanted to have a change in the exhaust note and but dyno.

Found with a little research that the stock air box does pretty well as an intake. I decided try the BMC air filters and the removal of the charcoal liner in the stock box. I don't plan to have a crazy build but of course want to play

After the install...I definitely got the change in exhaust note..it's more throatier but haven't taken it out for a drive yet. As far as HP gains I've seen mixed reviews..so make your own educated decision.

If anyone is interested in getting more sound from their stock exhaust and it be budget friendly...and maybe HP gains...give the BMC filters a try and remove the charcoal liner in the air box. Took maybe 30 minutes? Here the tutorial I used:

Looking forward to yor findings once have driven the car for a while. Especially interested in torque/power and throttle response in the low/mid rpm range. Have read many mixed results about replacement air filters in th S55.

I replaced my stock air filters with drop in K&Ns and removed the charcoal filters. I did it very quickly after after break-in (over a year ago) so any gains or anything were hard to notice since I wasn’t really pushing the car hard beforehand.

There are increased gains b/c there is a decrease in resistance. What everyone seems to gloss over is that w/the decrease in resistance there is an increase in dirt getting into the engine. The filter's purpose is to filter out the crap and as he showed there isn't a significant difference between a clean and dirty stock filter.

What I rarely see compared is how well each of these filters actually filter. If I remember correctly only Jim Conforti did a comparison like that when he was selling foam filters.

Yes, the K&N is used on race cars (sponsors) but race engines are also torn down, magnafluxed and rebuilt.

Think about it this way. Which filter would you rather use in your HVAC? The one that filters the dust and pollen or the one that lets the HVAC "perform" better?

EDIT: I didn't find the original article but did find this one. BTW, I'm NOT advocating the use of foam filters. They have the same issues but possible to a lesser extent dependent on their efficiency.

Took it out! The throttle and acceleration has a noticeable gain from but dyno

Again I did my own research on gains, pros/cons etc.. made my own decided to give it a shot and I'm keeping it in for sure.

In the E39 M5 world, oiled filters have a reputation for degrading the performance of the mass air filter sensors (MAFS), of which the car has two. Obviously the S55 doesn't have MAFS (at least not visible). Is there any concern for oiled filters with this engine?

I would remove the charcoal filters and keep the OEM Air filters. Best of both worlds. Less restriction but with OEM Air filtering.

Super easy actually. Just use a flat head. There is even slots to pry it out. Check the link above.

Jim Conforti! That’s a blast from the past. Wasn’t he the Bonneville motor works guy?

I remember installing a K&N cone filter on my e36 in the 90s. Sounded cool but made the car very slow on a hot day. Then I put the air box back in with a K&N slip in. Then switched back to the standard part which I think was the best.

Pretty much my story with the K&N and the E46... 🙂 sounded good but killed my MAF (and it did that in the form it came out of the box....)

Installed this last night, and I'm happy to hear much more engine/turbo noise. Reading that other forum though it sounds like most of that just comes from removing the charcoal filter.

nice post! Took about 15-20 mins from start to finish pulling the carbon filters out. Just need to go for a ride. Still can't make my mind up regarding filters.

You remove the carbon strut? Or is there a way to access without having to? Can not recall if the M2C is any different than the F80.
