That article was published before the release of the M2. I believe the engines (enhancements) are exactly the same though the M2 may have additional cooling, etc.

Section 4, even references the closed-deck design.

The newly developed M Performance TwinPower Turbo in-line six-cylinder petrol engine for the new BMW X4 M40i combines high performance with exemplary fuel economy. Accordingly, the lightweight, thermodynamically optimised aluminium engine has been constructed with what is known as a closed-deck design. In this type of construction, the water jacket surrounding the cylinders is sealed at the top, which endows the crankcase with an exceptionally high degree of stiffness.

BMW M3 and M4 engine components.
The drive unit powering the new BMW X4 M40i is based upon the three-litre, in-line six-cylinder engine in the BMW X4 xDrive35i. In order to fulfil the exacting dynamic demands placed upon BMW M Performance vehicles in all respects, our development engineers have optimised the drive unit using a forged steel crankshaft in addition to components from the high-performance engine fitted to the BMW M3 and BMW M4, which were introduced in 2014. This is how, among other things, pistons with an adapted top ring, crankshaft bearings and high power spark plugs found their way from the six-cylinder in- line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology to the new BMW X4 M40i.
the x4 M40i makes less hp than the m2

Is like new x4 geting s58 and the new m3 will have slightly upgraded version making more power

Maybe that's related to how the tuned the X4 vs. the M2? TRQ is the same.

The new S58 in the X3M and X4M and comp versions are putting out some really impressive numbers. I thought that was a killer engine until I watched the B58 teardown. A lot of pieces are "integrated" instead of bolted on externally, e.g. intercooler, header and probably requiring some custom fab to modify? Though the S58 has a S55 style intercooler on the side instead of integrated into the value cover. Going to watch that guy to see how he makes the B58 put out 1000HP.

OMG still a M2 vs M2C thread?

M2 is million times better than M2C. Please end this debate now. God, I'm sick of this ...

Previous to the M2C I had a M235i. That had an exhaust on it and I really loved the way it sounded. The M2C also has an exhaust on it but to me, it doesn't sound nearly as good. Weirdly, a lot of friend that heard both cars prefer the M2C exhaust sound, which is kind of baffling to me.

Why? Because cabin insulation in new BMW's is on-point. Even with ASD turned off and with a catless straight-pipe exhaust system, interior noise has nothing to do with exterior noise. And don't get me started on Drone.

While I love the OG M2, I'd rather have the S55 engine than a good exhaust sound I personally won't even hear.

I do agree that stock OG M2 sound is the best though. The M-Performance Exhaust on my OG M2 was a contributing factor in why I sold the car. Over-priced perpetually droning piece of garbage.
B58 engines even sound better than N55 (stock for stock)
S55 are louder but unpleasant to the ear

Best wishes.
Exhaust sounds are so subjective. What is good for some, sounds bad to others.

On my old M2 I went through a full Fabspeed setup (downpipe and muffler delete) towards a DINAN setup (resonator delete and free flow muffler) which I loved. Fabspeed setup had drone and some rasp since it lacked a muffler. With DINAN the car had grunt and deep tone, but after 5k RPM it was toned down.

To me, Stock vs Stock the M2 sounds better than the M2C, I owned both and had them stock for a while.

Stock M2C exhaust has a different tone than the S55 on the M3/M4.

My current exhaust setup on the M2C sounds raw after 5K which is where the M2 I felt toned down. Videos never capture the sound completely, have had multiple people in person tell me I figured how to make an S55 sound good.

But I am sure my setup is too loud for many people's taste, for me its perfect.

The beauty about having different opinions right now is that we actually have options to choose from as well.

N or B or S/ 55 or 58

For instance
