Yea, you mean realistic?

Its a machine; a collection of parts attached to a steel frame, if you change said parts to enhance how it performs, how can you tell which one has a "soul" and which one is "dead?"

I do get what you're saying but It's all subjective.

And OP, there are a treasure trove of YouTube that highlights the pros and cons of both vehicles. One is loud and emotional and the other is subtle and a sleeper car.

Pick the one that appeals to you based on your needs and personality. I'm guessing that's the reason BMW sells both at the same time, to give us choices..

Obviously you're not a car guy... It's not just a machine, just like your dog (if you're a dog guy) is not just an animal so I think you can get where I'm going. I was just suggesting you save your stupid comment of 'cars don't have souls' for a place that would get that. A car forum full of enthusiasts at the least never mind the obsessed and car lovers / fanatics we have and appreciate have no time for this argument. So again, save the comment, save the classic "it's subjective' and just let people write the emotional or symbolism once in a while... thanks

It actually blows my mind just how much BMW were able to improve the car in terms of handling and behavior through corners and the overall ride quality. The engine is amazing too. So happy I made the switch, the price difference would be worth it to me and I would 100% do it again.
But Bro, the engine sounds way worse and you could have saved like 30k if you just kept the old car.

Just kidding, I made the same swap 2017 to 2019 M2C, very happy. The motor alone make the swap worth it. The N55 ran out of breathe at 4,500 RPM like it was a Subaru.

And some people use humor to empathize a retort. Nothing personal.

Alright "quikM2", didn't mean to spill your talk glass of M Koolaid, it's obviously the bestest car in the world and nothing else can obviously match up.. The end.

Happy now?

I think they are offering Mechanical LSD on the M240 as a separate part now.

They are... it's $3000+ for the part + install though, and the jury seems to be out as to whether there's much difference in an automatic car. I think that there would be, but without taking one out for a spin, it's a pretty big gamble.

I have an M240 and I may tune or add bolt on mods, LSD in the future but I'm content with it and plan on keeping it for a long time. Would I like an M2C or M2CS? Sure, why not. But M240 is plenty quick stock and gives me a lot of fun for the driving which I do. In 10 years from now, when everyone goes electric or Hybrid, I think people will appreciate the Inline 6s.

Granted this is an M2 forum, but Road & Track compared the M2 6mt vs the M235 6mt (w/lsd). On a 2 mile road course, the M2 was a mere 0.5 seconds faster. That's it all the while running wider tires, bigger brakes, better suspension parts, eLSD, and an extra 30whp/30wtq.

If you've ever driven an M235, you can tell BMW intentionally neutered the front axle with narrow 225 width tires up front. I'm running a 245 square setup and it makes a huge difference in front grip. It's rather staggering. I've got the LSD now plus the HJS downpipe and my M235 6mt with moonroof delete feels so much better than stock and feels no slower in a straight line than the 6mt M2 I've driven; probably because my car is making close to M2 stock numbers and my M235 is about 70lbs lighter than a 6mt M2.

I certainly agree that the M2 "feels" much better, better composed, more raw, and I love all of that for sure , but that feel doesn't necessarily equate into as big a difference in the real numbers as you'd expect.

With all that said, I truly love the M2 and am really eyeballing all the 2018 6mts for sale right now.

I had a 235 for ~18 months and it was the worst BMW I’ve had.

As I’ve said before, drove me out of the brand and into a Porsche, which just happened to be the best car I’ve ever owned.

One car has “it” (M2) and one car doesn’t (235/240).

PS - “quick” in a straight line isn’t what the M2 is about. If you don’t get that, well, the other car was made for people like you.

Thanks for your input! I don't doubt that the 235 can be effective, but the feel that you're describing is what I'm after. Well, that and a manual transmission. definitely not worried about chasing numbers or seconds on a track. I really thought that I could put up with my car being an automatic... I was wrong. I did get a great deal on it when I bought it, so no regrets here. I really think that my way forward is to enjoy my car as it is now, and to focus on saving toward an M2 upgrade in manual. Would definitely love to grab an '18 LCI model... we'll see.

I love the idea of a Cayman, but worry that the lack of expandable cargo space (frequent Costco shopper) and the increased costs of maintenance would be prohibitive at this point in time. Porsche is definitely on the radar for the long term though! A 997 is firmly on my "one day" list.

You'd be surprised at the overall space available - I moved my fiance's entire closet and wardrobe in the 981 once (excluding shoes ) and was shocked that it held everything.

The cost is definitely a "thing" and ultimately was what brought me back to BMW - but if you ever go and test drive one, you will be ruined forever - it's just different and on a completely different level, even from M cars.

The M performance line is fine for what it is, but BMW marketed the 235 as a replacement for the 1M, which it clearly wasn't. I had one of the first cars, bought it sight unseen and no test drive - so much of the blame is my own.

If your M235 is Xdrive and need the car for daily, I'd modify the M235i.

If for weekend duty for only nice days, I'd get the M2.

It's a daily, but not xdrive... I live in TN, so winters are pretty mild. The M2 would definitely be a DD.

Man, that's impressive! I love having folding rear seats though... makes it easy to transport longer items that don't bend. there's something very satisfying about pulling up to Home Depot in a little sports car and loading it up with home improvement stuff. Long items were the death of me when I had the Miata... nothing fun about driving home with broom handles trying to attack you from the passenger seat!

then go for the M2. Widebody alone was the deciding factor for me to get the M2. both cars have enough power to go to jail. I think resale will be much stronger with M2 in 10 years as all M cars do.

So true, and the wide body is gorgeous. My car looks malnourished sitting next to an M2, especially from behind.

I was deciding between my M2 and RS3 back 2 years ago. RS3 has that killer engine, beautiful interior along with AWD. The reason I chose the M2 is RS3 looks just like a normal S3 or even A3, it lacked road presence that M2 has. M2 with its widebody looks special and stands out a lot.
