Same here. You can go and pay indy shop for your oil changes etc.But if you have warranty issues you have to go to dealer.

Warranty work must be done at a BMW approved service dept and may include SW updates, as dictated by BMW. This usually involves flashing all modules to the latest FW as well as specific updates/add-ons FW updates/re-writes for warranty work. If on a finance deal though - read the small print as folks maybe in breach of contract opting for non-dealer servicing / M&R as these may be implicit to ensure GFV in the finance agreement.... Problem is that only a few people want to buy a used expensive BMW M car if it hasn`t been serviced at bmw and only at bmw. Atleast here in Finland, where there are so few M cars.
People are so suspicious when it comes to indy shops. |

Correct - fbmwsh has more value than just fsh - hence my comment about GFV above referring to owners obligations on finance T&C’s

For warranty, you don't even have to use OEM parts, only parts of an "equivalent standard" (but often OEM is the easiest way to go). The legal onus is on the dealer to "prove" you haven't serviced it properly rather than you to prove you have. That makes a big difference. Also remember dealers make make time fees on warranty work, so it is in their interest to do it if they can, and not be trying to shoot themselves in the foot! I found with my 335i and 330i that keen private buyers appreciated the indy servicing more because they know that BMW dealer techs are not all that good and they just do the bare minimum what the "computer told me to do". This was borne out in the private selling prices being way above book. My 335i went in for new HP fuel pump after 2.5 years without a single BMW service and with DPs fitted etc, not a single question asked. I see a used car with "full dealer history" and it just makes me think oh there's one that hasn't been looked after properly! Last edited by doughboy; 03-25-2019 at 05:21 AM.. |

My dealer just fired 6 of its workshop staff... My independent picked up the best ones and they are now working there. Dealer management then found out who they fired...
Now they don't have anyone decent to service cars and it takes 4 weeks to plan in an appointment. Yep, at least you have your "dealer warranty", but what does that hold when some pancake touches your car. MR |

Guys, had the RIS service and specifically asked them not to touch the software. Can’t help but feel steering weight is reduced in sports plus after driving it home 🤨 Although this is worrying, the DCT isn’t as jerky anymore. I wouldn’t say that having a smoother transmission at the expense of reduced steering weight was a worthwhile trade off!
I’m hoping it’s just placebo but knowing these “pancakes”, they don’t tend to respond to instructions so well. Any idea if I can check which software version I have and whether it’s been updated? Nothing mentioned on the invoice. I’d like to hope I still have the old software and it’s all placebo but the changed ‘feel’ is quite noticeable to me. Any way this can be reversed if that is the case? |

You should ask service advisor to read yr key and print out what was done / changed at RIS. They tend not to brag about this but its an option on their screens when they put a key into desktop reader. Alas, if RIS is done by dealer and Munchen boffins state implicitly "FW update" then dealer has to carry out FW update else they wont get "paid" by Orwellian HQ in Bavaria !! BP.

Thanks Dave, I’ll have to do that. I haven’t had a chance to drive the car since yesterday but I’m usually quite sensitive these sort of things. I’ll pop to the dealer and ask them to confirm if it’s been updated or not. And if so, can they reverse it. They did say that I’d have to sign a disclaimer that if I broke down anywhere without the update, then the recovery and breakdown costs wouldn’t be covered as the update hadn’t been done. Just the usual scare tactics from dealership personnel - they also told me BMW now makes their own oil - 🤔

My M2C steering has felt this way since day one. Many different software versions floating around.

So much for keeping dealer maintenance paperwork. I'll just have to save my receipts as I do my own work anyway. Hope it's enough if there's ever a warranty claim.
Someone mentioned in Europe they will void warranty if you don't update?? That can't be true.. |

Yesterday i drove an M2C with the last sw and it was exactly like the one i drove a couple of months ago
Still too heavy the steering in sport+, I prefer the sport setting. Last edited by VIERsr; 04-17-2019 at 02:12 AM.. |

Steering is as good as it ever was, it didn‘t change a single bit through the latest updates
(And I am SUPER sensitive to steering feel...) |

I’m going to have to sheepishly admit that I don’t think the update was done (as I’d asked), and that the steering has remained consistent as it did initially. I think the resetting of adaptations caused a considerable change (very light steering) initially which has resolved itself since then. The gearbox is also as jerky as before at low speed 🤣
Rather amusingly, I’ve now also switched to Comfort for the daily drives and Sport Plus only when pushing on. Hopefully, the package will be even better once Coilovers are fitted soon. My other reason for not wanting the update was the OBD lockout preventing BM3; but that doesn’t appear to have stopped the tuners 😏 |

Therefore no need to get it updated. If you go for BMW service though they may update it anyway, although in my experience in UK unless it is stipulated by BMW then dealers will only upgrade as stage 1 of any problem diagnosis as it cost them time to do it. |
