M2 dash lighting retrofit - is it possible?

Hi guys!

New to the BMW world and all that, so I'm curious - newer 3 series BMW's have some awesome ambient lighting, and the center consoles look extremely similar between the F30 3 series and the M2/2 series. So is something like this possible? Has anyone done it before? I've done some looking around but I can't find anything via google for the 2 series.

What are you asking? Retrofit to what? All the pics look the same?

I'm talking about what they discuss in this thread, the radio trim https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1165755

Is that lighting around the bottom trim (the U-shaped part) actually in the radio area, or coming from the ambient lights up in the overhead console? Those are the ones where you can switch the ambient lighting from classic (orange) to modern (white)?

It's actually lights that are around the bottom trim.

Man that's pretty subtle and would probably be a lot of work if possible for something very few people will notice.

Anythings possible if you have $10k you could probably find a shop that will make it happen for you. If there's no examples of retrofitting on the internet that's probably the route you'd have to go unless you're a savant with BMWs.

I guess my question is if BMW already does this in the 2 series or did it on a 2 series model, or if the 3 series center console is mostly the same as the 3 series (it looks like it??) Because that lighting is an OEM option on later 3 series BMW's, hence my question.

And I highly doubt it would be $10k, a guy did this retrofit on his M2 and it cost him $100.

Would be nice if we could buy these parts from him and just install.

I have a feeling if you bought the parts it would work. You would follow this DIY instead to draw power

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...&postcount=324

Parts are cheap enough to try.

Dash Piece (64119358940) is $60 USD
Pin (61131393723) is $6.40 for 5 (you need 4)
Plug (61136925611) is $8.90 (you need 1)
Wiring repair kit (61132359994) is $15 (you need 1)
3 Plug Terminal (61138377072) is $15 for 5 (you need 1)

Nice DYI, thanks for sharing!

I would do it if I was really motivated but the mini-OCD in me just hates splicing factory wires, I would of loved if it was more PnP..

But it wouldn't be a splice. You are buying the connectors/terminals to make a 3 way wire/splitter to draw power.

You're splicing power from the Emergency Speaker.. I know LEDs don't pull much power but it's still a draw. Probably not a big deal though..

This is intriguing. I really like lighting and this is super clean. I guess I just don't want to go first. I wish the page the OP linked to was in english . It seems he's better at English than I am at Korean.

Haha I'm a native english speaker, I'm only in Korea "temporarily" (long term work visa). My Korean isn't great.

So I used to live in Korea, and my wife is Korean, so I can read a little. All over that naver link are hashtags:

#BMW, #M2, #제이아이사운드, #커스텀, #엠비언트, #라이트, #블랙박스, #시공, #일산카오디오, #수입차전문

which translates as:

#BMW, #M2, #J.I.Sound (presumably the installation company), #Custom, #Ambient, #Light, #Black Box (what Koreans call a Dashcam), #Construction, #Ilsan (a region just outside Seoul) Car Audio, #Import Car Specialist

Having lived in Korea, I know that DIY is not something that people typically do. There is no such thing as Home Depot or Lowes, and even Ikea offers assembly as a service!

With all of that information, this looks like it's a custom job done by J.I.Sound, and that's their business, so they probably wouldn't be up for sharing the method used.

I'd love to be wrong, but that's my take away from that blog...

The only ambient lighting I've ever seen on a "motorsport" car are the numbers used on WEC cars in overnight races.

Same and same. I've actually been to the shop before and they did it as a custom job. They've done a few actually.
