To replace one tire or two?
I recently discovered a metal shard in one of my track tires (3 weekends of use) and it's not holding air pressure as well as the rest. Wondering if it's worth replacing the left and right side tires or only the damaged one since they're just track use tires. Happy to hear some thoughts!

It matters how much tread is left on the other tire. If it is near new tread depth one tire would be ok. If it has significant wear, replace both.

I just assumed since you said 3 track days, you would have "significant wear" |

Most shops will not plug a tire. It really depends on where the hole is located, size, state laws, etc.

4/32" is the max allowable tread depth delta per most manufacturers.
I've had 5 nails in my tires this summer, and ended up replacing 4 tires. Even with just 4/32" difference in tread depth between rear tires, I could feel it — especially under acceleration and deceleration, where the car would pull to the side of the newer, taller tire. Good news is my local BMW dealer matched any online price for the tires, which also includes a warranty for the tire. Icing on the cake is they probably won't scratch up your wheels in the process like most tire shops. |
