No.
The star tires are brand+model specific not just brand. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret....jsp?techid=22 https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret...currentpage=33 Last edited by omasou; 07-11-2019 at 09:03 AM.. |

So are we saying the BMW star or approved mark just designates that the tyre is an OE tyre?
If we are talking Michelin Pilot super sports that have both Mercedes & BMW OE tyres it's noted they seem to be different prices, all be it ony a couple of pounds difference, are we say there is in fact no difference in those tyres? regards, |

Sometimes the difference is the number of channels or tread pattern. https://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e6...-markings.html Continental has an extensive range of OE tires. OE keys on the tire sidewall identify the brand and model. https://www.continental-tires.com/ca...inal-equipment The real difference is asking your dealer to install X tire on your car. I asked them to install Michelin AS3+ on the X4 and service said they could not order them b/c they were not "BMW Approved" and the BMW Approved are not STAR tires. Not in the US. The only place I know that would be crazy enough for something like that is Germany. Perhaps the tires HAVE to be Star approved if BMW or NO if Porsche, etc. Someone in Germany can chime in on that one but for the rest of the world, no. The difference between star rating on the exact same model tires is miniscule and no one would ever notice. The manufacturer sets requirements for the tire manufacturer. They will say this model has to stop in the wet in 150 feet (usually metric equivalent). So Michelin will tune the 4S or Supersport slightly to achieve that specific requirement. Whereas the generic version stopped in 151 feet or 152 for example. At the same time, perhaps the non-marked 4S had a better dry braking distance but they have to meet the manufacturer requirement on that model. You can see the specs on Tire Rack website and compare all side by side. Some will have a slightly narrower contact patch that was adjusted to meet the wet requirement, etc. I have run Star, Unmarked and NO Porsche versions on my car in the same size and model and have never been able to tell much difference. I have been able to tell the difference between tire models like the PS2 and Supersports but not because of the Star rating.

Sort of, but often multi-model specific. If you check say an m2comp rear tyre star marked, the same tyre is for quite a few models.
You don't order a tyre by car model its by size / load/ star mark only so they can't be different for different models. See bmw tyre part num for m2comp rear also for 1mcoupe, m2, e90, e91, e92, e93.. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...&q=85452593830 |
