buying a demo car?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So i found out that there was a 2019 lbb m2 comp for sale for a decent price with only 3500 miles on the clock at my local dealership. I took it for a test drive and everything went well, there was two notable dings in the paint that really bugged me but they said they could have a paintless dent guy pull them out before selling. The car hadn't even been washed yet it was so fresh on the lot. But when we sat down to talk about numbers they had mentioned that the dealer had to purchase it as a new car even though it was used. this was because it had never had an actual owner because it was a demo car.

should i pass on this as the car was probably abused all it's life. Have any of demo'd a car before and would you recommend buying or passing on the vehicle?

Thanks a bunch!

If it's an awesome deal, why not? Look at it like dating a stripper. Its not like she hasn't had some fun before, whats the difference with you. Get the car and beat on it! (but make sure you get set up with an extended warranty...for free since you're doing them a favor)

Was it broken in properly? Does it come with full new car warranty and maintenance agreement? What is the price? How much more to order precisely what you want?

3500 miles adds up to a lot of test drives. Assuming a generous 15 miles per test drive, that's 233 test drives in a year. Maybe some salesmen were driving it to/from home? I'd find out more about how the car was used.

Edit: I would also check to see if this was a press car.

I bought 03 Acura tls as a demo car loaded with every option but it was certified with 6y 100k mi. There were no dings and full service history was provided. It was managers personal car. Looked brand new for thousands less. I never had an issue with it.

So if they can show the service history and certify it I would consider it. I would also request PPI. You want to know the condition of the engine, chassis, brakes etc. If they start to find excuses walk away.

Have them CPO the car to give you an extra year of warranty and give you the extended maintenance. You should be fine if they give you both.

What they mean is the car has never been titled. Therefore, you would be the first owner and get the BMW 3/36 mo service plan and 4/50K warranty.

It's the best scenario, if you like the car and it's in good shape. The only better scenario is an Executive car from NJ or NC.

BTW, paintless dent removal results are UNBELIEVABLE!

Unless they are having a hard time selling the car, I doubt they would CPO it for free. If they do, they will probably charge him the CPO certification fee, which wouldn't be worth the cost.

Better to spend ~$700 to upgrade the service plan to BMW Ultimate Care+ which will cover his first brake and rotor change, saving him ~$200 for had he bought the parts alone. Actually, more b/c my X4 parts were $900 sans the service; the M2 parts are more. He can also wait and buy it later as long as the service plan is still active.

My dealer CPOs all M cars that are 3 years old or less. Not an unreasonable request for a demo car that is 2 model years old (2021s are in production).

He can ask and should but I personally wouldn't pay extra for it. He's already getting the factory warranty.

Also, when dealers do that, they typically bake the CPO costs into the price.

An extra year of warranty on a demo or service loaner car I would consider a necessity.

The car has 3500 miles. What would you expect to break in an additional 12 months that wouldn't break in the first 48?

All good advice. How long do you plan (or expect) to keep the car?

I once bought a (non-BMW) demo because the salesman was driving the configuration we wanted. Only 1500 miles on it and not a performance car (crossover/SUV), kept it for 9 years and 170K trouble free miles.

But 3500 miles is a lot, especially on an M2C. I guess it would depend on how good the discount was and if you are comfortable with it.

Wow so many replies already! thank you guys so much for the input. So the deal they showed me would be around 54k for the car. It does have the exec package. as far as having them cpo it for me i have a strong feeling i could have it done.

i would plan on keeping the car for many years! Unless something bad happened with my company and i was forced to get rid of it.

yes thats a great idea. and my main worry would be if this car being a demo car was ever brought to like a bmw track day event. that's the only real issue i would be worried about.

Is it DCT or manual? Is that 54 out the door (including all taxes and fees and certification)? Personally, I'd rather spend a bit more and get brand new, especially when you consider how people drive demo cars.

So i believe after taxes and everything it was like 55k (no states sales tax) and yeah that was my main reason for asking. if it was like 51k i would have purchased it already. Also its Dct. another thing is i haven't been able to find any LBB cars near me besides one that was brand new for 76k which is to rich for my blood. (besides this demo car of course). And I'm sticking with only the blue.

My other option would be to wait and find a car thats in blue that someone else has possibly done work to like carbon fiber upgrades and whatnot and purchase it from them. But who knows when that will become available. Cause so far it seems like LBB cars don't go up for sale as often.

For $55K out the door and CPOed I would buy it. KBB average price for a 2019 M2C with 3,500 miles is just below $54K.
