the rear is also aggressive, but 4 huge tailpipes a bit OTT in my opinion.

off the line it should smoke us traction wise with its allwheeldrive and sticky tires..

let me know what you think about the pictures.. is it a ture M2 rival?

Update 5/7/19:
car released- find a few screenshots of the carwow clips below, 421hp/500nm 3.9sec 0-100km/h sounds promising, interior is gorgeous imo..

I will answer your question with two questions:
1. Manual?
2. Rear wheel drive?
if MB doesnt have BOTH of these, there is no rivalry.

A45S looks great but it weighs even more than the already heavy M2C with 1635kgs!

If it can do this irl(I don't think it's really possible on DRY surfaces to get the backend stepping out like this).
This is at our 'own' driftdays testtrack @ Papenburg Germany, near the Dutch border. It's owned by Mercedes Benz. And we are there about 4/5 times a year depending. I was there last april.

Weight aside, that looks like a ton on fun..

Nothing beats that cool rush you get when you can comfortable swerve into that intersection, at over 70mph..

You know if the hatchback version is US bound or is it Euro/ROW only?

Clearly it is a consideration since the Bentley's switchgear is straight out of a 2001 Passat.

Some Rolls Royce models uses the same tire and that's own by BMW AG.

This thing may not have the same drivetrain and engine layout as the M2 but if it performs similarly around track and town, and is close to price point, why wouldn't it be a good comparison?

The M2 isn't the best and only option around...I know some owners are biased here.

good to hear...maybe bmw will just use the new 135i platform and make a 1m fwd-awd platform and move the m2 up market to where the f82 first started.

From a business stand point i dont see BMW having the current M2 layout compete against the rs3 and a45...both mercedes and audi are making more money off their cars compared to BMW since the fwd layout is a lot cheaper compared to rwd.

Yeah, I think you're spot on, but the statement "I don't know how or why anybody would cross-shop these" is an odd, incessant thing on this board. I guess those of us that don't bin vehicle choices by $$, number of doors, size, driven wheels, hp, or some marketing speak as to intended market have to just expect the comments and cross-shop them anyway

I'm not a huge fan of the A45, but it's a fun-ish car that burns up disposable income to get so they seem worth comparing to me!

It's a fun car for sire and fast as hell by the looks of it. Looks pretty good too.

If i was in the market for a compact 4wd car with an automatic gearbox it would be on the list for sure..

Totally agree. It's the best in its class, only it's not the same class as the M2C.

I think the "I don't know why anyone would cross-shop these" is often a bit of a slur against the automobile in question being compared to the car you own. You see that a lot when someone brings up a Camaro SS. Seeing the Camaro 1LE outperforms the M2C around any track and is also a RWD 2-door layout it's pretty obvious why people interested in driving fast around a track would cross-shop them or a Mustang for that matter as with the PP2 it's in a dead heat with the M2C. Personally when it comes to 4 door hatches I've always felt if it performs similarly to a 2-door coupe then it's game on as the hatch and extra doors is simply a utility bonus. I pretty well had to choose between a Civic Type R and my M2 as I put money down on both and they were both delivered at the same week by chance and never once did I fixate on the the differences because I knew both were very good all around performing cars.

I need a 4 door car as I have a new child so have just completed 2 test drives of the A45s this week. Long story short, I just can't rate it next to my M2.
Yes, its fast. The power is there instantly and pulls hard for as long as I was able to test it (~170km/h). It does it without any fuss and the shifts are crisp and fast. But so much of the praise being heaped on its steering and dynamics is really only in relative terms to the earlier iterations. It pales next to the M2 for fun and engagement.
The interior is overkill, its ridiculous really. I like my tech but I like driving more.

I think I'll be keeping the M2 (permanently) and getting a small SUV for daily use with the kid. The M2 imo still stands alone at the price point for what it delivers.

I hate how much Americans hate hot hatches. I would have picked up an A45s in a split second and never would have considered the M2C had that been available here.

...and yet SUVs are all the rage...

Makes no sense. They are hatchbacks with lift kits!

I can't speak for Americans but in my case its certainly not the hatch that troubled me with the A45s, its the driving dynamics and the communication between the car and driver (and the aforementioned interior/MBUX, subjective of course).
Drift mode aside, its still a FWD dominant system and whilst it makes you feel like you can almost do anything, you never quite get the sense you're the one doing it.

The 'practical' car I settle on would in fact be a MK8 Golf R, a hatch no less, but its not due in Australia until 2022.

Do you guys get the CLA45s sedan (saloon?) That might be your solution.

Looks good on paper, until you get to the MB logo.

We only get the CLA 45 (non-S) here in the US. MB is very weird with how they decide which markets get the S and non-S models.

It's not for me personally, although it does look pretty good inside and out. I'm not the biggest fan of 4 cylinders, need 3 pedals (at least on ICE powered vehicles) and would prefer RWD although that's not 100% necessary.

Kind of leaves the M2C by itself, a true dying breed.
