I like the power delivery of the CS tune but prefer the optional brute punch of stage 1, but with a progressive rightfoot you can get CS output with a stage 1 tune but still have the punch when you want.
I'm not concerned whether its like "OEM" just whether I like it. |

Whelp adding this to the "to do" list. There's a local BM3 vendor that can do the DME unlock for me.

Can they do it without removing the DME or is removing the DME the only way?

You do not need to remove the DME it can remain in place for a bench unlock (pre july 2020).
For me flipping the TMIC works (5min work), there are guys who access from the bottom of the car using a mirror and pre installed plugs to connect to the DME in stead of wiring to the individual pins (which I do). Personally I consider fliiping the TMIC such an easy route I would not consider putting the car on the bridge and remove the skidplate etc. If you have done it before and have the right tools (like Autotuner or Bflash) it's ca. an hours work incl your preparations. |

M2Cs built before March 2019 (or so) can be unlocked and flashed through the OBDII port. There is no need to remove the DME. Cars from April 2019 to June 2020 need to be bench flashed or manually wired to the DME for unlocking. Unfortunately after July 2020 there is a good chance that because of the new Bosh encryption the DME will be unflashable except by BMW.

I wish there wasn't a need to bench unlock but I guess it is what it is. |

Find a local tuner that supports the platform you want to use. If they can unlock it (have experience) and then install whatever tuning pkg you like. There is no need to pull the DME out, but they do need to move the A/W intercooler as others have mentioned to get at it. I had mine done in a couple hours while I waited. Had to drive 200 miles to find a shop that could do it here in the NE. I wanted to get ECUTEK installed but it just wouldn't take for some reason. Ended up with BM3 and now am finalizing a 93 Pump custom tune with Cary Jordan. Car is wicked now

Here are my thoughts: - Stage 1 map is much stronger and more responsive than CS, especially out of boost in low rpm and part-throttle - It feels more like a naturally aspirated V8 - I've got the boost by gear reduction at 30%, 20%, 10% in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears respectively. After changing between the two, I much prefer the Stage 1 map, especially with 15% ethanol in our garbage gas up here in Canada. Last edited by n8dgr84; 01-21-2021 at 10:34 PM.. |
