1) Been a BMW guy my whole life. One of my first memories was of a Henna Red E30 M3 when I was about 5 years old. Also succinctly remember seeing a green 850i E31 back in the day and absolutely being in love. I rated it as high as the Countach and F40. My passion for BMW's is the reason I became a mechanical engineer and currently work in the auto industry.
My first BMW was my first car, and it was an E46 328i sedan, with a 5MT and sport package. I learned to wrench on that car. 2) No regrets, as I've never sold any of the M's I've ever bought (E36 M3, E92 M3 and Z4M Roadster). First one was the E92 M3 and I'm coming up on 9 years of ownership with 0 desire to sell. Quote:
I've got a Techno Violet M3 Coupe that I bought in 2013. There's been a few times I've considered letting it go and replacing it with a LBB M2C 6MT. I never grew up worshipping the E36 (was more of an E30 and E46 kind of a guy), but every time I drive this car, it always charms the hell out of me. While things may change, these are the 3 options I'm looking at in a few years 1) Keep all M's, add F87 2) Keep all M's, add G87 if it's the last manuals offered 3) Sell E36 M3, add an M2 of some kind 4) Implode the collection, keep 1 M and get a Porsche of some kind Oh the joys of being a car guy

My first was my dad's car, E90 Black sapphire on Terra. He gave it to me after driving it for a number of years. I still remember the day we picked her up from the dealership. Originally went to get a boring silver on black car but saw this beauty on the showroom floor and bought it same day. Turns out it was a custom ordered car that the original guy backed out of. It was just an absolute joy to drive with impeccable build quality. What a solid feeling car. That car triggered my love affair with the brand. There have been several other E-chassis models within the family that I've adored over the years. I'm in my late 20s so have yet to buy my very first BMW (grad school loans!), but I will have a new car within the next 2-3 yrs and am planning on the M2.
No regrets, just wish I had sold the car sooner. It was becoming a garage queen and money pit due to its constant issues. I didn't expect that from an impeccably maintained one family car. I sold it to one of my best friends, it's his problem now. Whenever we meet up he lets me take it for a spin. All the nostalgia and good memories return, what a wonderful car.

1) How to code intro (this explains the process step by step, I used this to walkthrough coding but DO NOT use any of the codes in there as it's for a different car.) 2) This thread tells you what codes to change for the steering, lsd, and traction. I recommend sticking with things for the F87 chassis as using the M4 coding can lead to weirdness (based on my research) but do whatever you want. Also Euro MDM can be coded for traction rather than turning it off. 3) This thread is where you can ask for the data files Make sure you know what you're doing before you use them I recommend googling as much as possible about E SYS coding f87 and BMWs. It'll be confusing until you do it for the first time. I did a dry run and didn't change anything a few times just made sure I could get to the right codes before I actually made an edit. If you screw around in this area you can brick your car so make sure you are following instructions properly. If your ECU firmware is older you'll need to update it, that's a little more involved and I had the dealer do mine because the car should be hooked up to a power source (it can be done without but it's like playing russian roulette) Best of luck. |

My BMW story is not that interesting but here it is. I grew up a Mopar fan and had several including 2 Dodge Daytonas in the 80's. A coworker had a late 80s BMW 325i 4dr 5 speed. It seemed like a nice well built car, although I never drove it. Fast forward to the mid to late 90s and I had a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4. A fantastic sports car but I wanted more. I saw a 97 528i at a car show and shortly thereafter signed up for a test drive at a BMW drive for charity event. I drove the 528i, e36 M3, but fell in love with the 540i. My father was a family sedan kind of guy and asked why I'd spend so much money on a BMW. He came along on a test drive and said "I understand now....". I saved up for 2 years and as soon as the 3000GT lease was up I traded for a 99 540i.
I've now owned a bunch of 5 series including 2 M5s, Z4, X models, etc. The list is below... I now have the M2 Comp and just picked up a 2020 X3M. Few regrets with any of them

The M2C sacrifices some of the tech of the big brothers (HUD, active cruise, massage, etc) but has everything you need to enjoy the drive, whether street or track. It may not have the lightness and telepathic feel of older ///Ms but its great for today. It's definitely the possibility of a keeper.

My boss/owner of the first company I worked for had a e36 m3 he bought used. I remember four of us piled in to go see a movie and I was struck by how it was sporty and practical, but it didn't scream for attention like other sporty cars. I thought to myself I could really see myself in one of these "m3" cars. The e46 m3 was out and I thought it was just the coolest looking car! Quad exhaust!
Previous to knowing about the m3 I thought you had to choose either a practical car like a Toyota Camry or sports a car like a corvette. That guy sold the company and bought a used Ferrari 360 I think. When I asked about it he said he liked the m3 more because the Ferrari was so uncomfortable. An m3 was out of my price range so I got a Mazda 3 but always thought about an m3. Later I moved to NYC and a car wasn't needed but my father kept the Mazda for me because we knew NYC wouldn't last forever, though sometimes I wish it did. Later I moved back to the west coast and was driving around a 13 year old Mazda 3 and at Christmas time 2016 my dad and his friends were like well what kind of car would you get? And I was saying oh well that new Audi A4 is supposed to be nice. They said no, what car do you actually want? I thought well an m3, but I heard about that 1M, maybe they're cheap now (lol) but I never see them on the road for some reason, why? And I heard an M2 just came out, maybe I can afford that? That took me down an obsessive rabbit hole of m2 research until I got a 2017 model. Too bad I was too ignorant of BMW to know about LCI coming soon. Oh well, I've enjoyed the M2 quite a lot since then! Road trip in it starting this Saturday. Also I couldn't die without experiencing a high revving NA motor so in addition to the M2 I got an e90 M3 and I'm buried in Ms now! |

A: Never had a bigger "must have feeling" after I saw for the first time the M2 back in 2015. Probably I will never have a conection like this to a car.

My friends dad owned a E30 320i in the late 80's, from the time I saw that car it was love at first sight! It was a 6 cylinder, had a very deep throaty exhaust note and the interior dash looked to me like it was out of a space shuttle! Fast forward 10 yrs later and I bought my first BMW which was a black on black 325i mtechnic. That car was a blast to drive and looked the part too. Drove it for 2 years and eventually sold it as I needed the money to start a new business venture. 😔

M2c was the best new car available under 100k, in my opinion. No regrets! Although the new Porsche GT4 might be my next car depending on what BMW does with the next m2. |

Apart from a JCW Mini, BMW never built anything that tempted me to open my wallet prior to the 1M which didn't suit at the time as I needed a 2 pedal car my wife could drive if required (I have 2 manual tarmac rally cars for my Motorsport fun). When the M2 was released it was the ideal base for a new daily & I sold my A45 AMG to get into one.
Imo the 1M/M2 were the sweet spot for modern day BMW' & apart from maybe an E30 M3 resto nothing else from the brand appeals. No regrets despite spending a lot getting it to where I'm happy with it & im not finished, although I do that with most my cars so that's nothing new...

I fell in love with the e36 coupe when it was new and I was a teenager. I promised myself I would one day buy that car.
That didn't really happen but about 15 years later I bought e46 coupe and since then I have only bought BMWs. No regrets. |

Q1: What made you buy your first BMW?
A1: For starters my uncle owned a red e30 M3 that we rallied across central Florida in the late 80’s and I was the navigator for the race. 20+ years later I bought a B5 S4 Audi and have been driving that for almost 18 years now and looking to replace that. Since the S4 has gotten so big that I was looking into the S3/RS3/M2. Granted the Audi suit me more for my area but I have other vehicles to get around for the winter. Also the M2 looked so much better! So then I decided M2 it is, next thing you know the M2c was released and I was ready to pull the trigger but then I got wind of the the M2cs. So without delay because M2 was going to get a redesign I put down a deposit for 1st allocation back in Oct of 2019. Finally the order has gone through and the car is in transit now crossing the Atlantic. Q2: Do you have any regrets? A2: Don’t know yet but highly doubt it. BTW this is my first post here. Just joined about a week ago. |

Found the picture of my uncles's e30 M3 we did the rally across central Florida.
So I would say this is the reason I am finally pulling the trigger to get one. Sory if the photos are huge. The preview was a bit extreme.

1. I grew up in a really wealthy city, however we didn't have much money. My parents and I immigrated to the US in 1990. By the time I was in high school (98-01), friends had 328s, M3s, S4s, and various Acuras. I had a Volvo lol. I wanted a used 325 so bad but just couldn't find one for my budget. We ended up starting to do fairy well so my first car that I ended up buying was a Grand Cherokee. However I still dreamt of a M3.
By the time I was done with college and got a real job, I got a 350Z because I fell in love with the car and of course, the price. Then a bunch of years later, saw a used F80 for sale. Knew that I had to have one. Bought a one year old F80, motor blew up on the way home from the dealership, guys, i kid you not. Got a call a couple of weeks later from my SA and she said that they would make it up to me by selling me a 20 M2C (this was in April of 2019), under MSRP. Got the deal done. Love this car. 2. Nope

Well the S4 isn't my longest, my supra I have had for over 23 years and counting. I still own the S4 as well but as much as I love it, it is time to move on so will most likely sell it next year in the spring. I have a few people interested in it and I think it could use a better home. It is kind of tired with 174k miles and I am a tad tired myself working on it. Albeit I can work on the damn thing with my eyes closed by now. On the other hand, if I had my uncles e30 M3 then I would take that one to the grave. Which brings me to getting my first BMW this year and plan to own it probably until retirement.

My first BMW was a 1972 BMW 2002. I was in the US Army and stationed in Frankfurt, Germany and needed a second car. Someone that I worked with new a German guy who sold used BMW's. I bought the 2002 and never looked back, it was a great fun car.
