1) Use the pry tool to lift the charging cradle from the front. Once the front is lifted, you can simple lift the entire cradle out of the armrest.
I've fallen over at the first hurdle and can't seem to budge it - even with a prying tool.

Is there a knack ?

I put the smaller part of an allen wrench through the hole in front (Where the pry tool goes) and turned it sideways to point directly to the rear of the car (and under the charging tray). Then used vice grips to clamp on the allen wrench and pulled up. Popped right out.

Does anyone have a pic of the coil itself? It sounds like the BMW design has poor efficiency.

If I ever decide to get an M2, I might consider designing a replacement that can achieve higher efficiency. Not sure I like the location anyway though .

Since it’s in a cradle anyway, the best thing would be creating an insert that could provide lightning or USB-C. A USB C to lightning connection can charge an iPhone XS at something close to 15W peak. You’re getting 5W best case from BMW’s Qi implementation.

So my phone went into protection again. My first instinct was to grab my phone to take a picture to show everyone. Didn't really think that plan through.

Hello,
Would you describe and maybe add some pictures about how you removed the charging module in the X2 ? I don't want to break the whole thing.

Thanks for your help,

Quentin

1) Use the pry tool to lift the charging cradle from the front. Once the front is lifted, you can simple lift the entire cradle out of the armrest.
2) There are four clips (2 on each side) holding the bottom to the charger. I just used a flat head screwdriver to pop them out and then remove the charger.
3) Now the trickiest part, disassembling the charger. For this, I stuck a blade (pry tool was a bit thick) in the open space where the bracket moves and pushed down to separate the top and bottom halves.
4) Now you have access to the two t6 screws that hold the bottom bracket in place.

Below are pictures I just took of the step by step process. Let me know if I can be of more help.

BTW, with this mod i can fit my massive Note 9 on here.
Can you please share the 3D file?

I would love to work for an automaker for a week or so and be in the meetings where they decide on implementing things such as the wireless charger for the 2 series. Surely someone in that room must have raised the question ethat the charger won't fit half the phones on the market and therefore be useless for a lot of their customers. I just don't understand how anyone could green light something like this.

Oh, it's simple. Believe it or not, I've run into more luddites working in advanced tech/product engineering than anyplace I've ever been! Maybe it's the overly practical nature of a good number of engineers that makes them good implementer and problem solvers, I dunno

In any case, it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that nobody thought of it because "who in their right mind needs a phone with a 7" screen when my flip phone works just fine?".

Just a theory extrapolated from many personal experiences with coworkers that don't get the stuff we are designing...

Despite all that, someone should have caught this tho

iPhone X with a Lifeproof Slam case fits, but the Fre case does not. I find it hard to text while driving when it’s in the cradle though anyways 🤣🤣

My GFs Samsung Galaxy S8 fits like a glove.

Also, not sure why everyone is complaining about the wireless chargers performance. It charged her phone 20% in about 10 minutes. Totally worth it.

It just sucks my Note9 doesn't fit.

1. Using a plastic trim tool, wedge it at the front of the wireless charger assembly and it will pop open, may need to add a little force.

2. Pull up and remove carefully and you'll see screws holding the slider in place, remove screws and remove slider.

3. You can honestly pop it back in place and it will hold a larger phone just fine, or install the 3D printed piece and put together

This took me about 5 min

My XS doesn't go into protection mode, but it thermal throttles itself so hard I notice my carplay lagging. Additionally, I can't touch it to take it out because it is so hot.

I'm pretty sure this is a side effect of the phone operating and charging in a closed space without any airflow - I wonder why nobody else is experiencing this issue? Perhaps there should be airflow under the armrest and ours is broken?

For me, I've just learned to enjoy the comfort of not having to take my phone out of my pocket and just use carplay. Usually I have plenty of charge because I charge at home, and I do have a normal wired charger in the car just in case.

I find that it works pretty well with my iPhone 8, it doesn't heat up too much if I keep the cover and the charging time is acceptable.
For me it's worth it
