Hmmm, I added Exec pack and a big reason was for 552 Adaptive LEDs. If they come standard I'm considering taking off the Exec pack. I'm wondering what the 5A2 headlights are then?

Thanks for confirmation. Feeling a little snookered by BMW USA on this one, but I'll get over it.

5AC is the code for automatic high beams. Basically, there is a sensor that automatically adjusts for ambient light and will switch back and forth between low beam and high beam when approaching oncoming traffic on a dark road.
Handy feature if:

1. it really works as advertised
2. you drive on a lot on dark, rural roads

1. personally don't like how it works at all on xenon headlights, it hasn't improved from the 1m to the m2 in my opinion. my sa says there's a world of difference with the led's. Haven't been able to drive those yet.

2. absolutely right, won't do a thing with road lights or even tails far ahead, guess it's on the 'safe' side. Misses high beams of oncoming traffic often enough though.

Not worth the money imo. My advice is to test drive it before ordering.

5A2 is actually the standard "LED Headlights"
5AC is the "Automatic high beams"

And of course 552 is the "Adaptive LED Headlights"

That's the non-adaptive LED headlights.

I called BMW NA to ask about the 552 Adaptive LED Headlights being standard in the US and, as expected, they still claim it's part of the Exec Pkg. Also had my CA check Vehicle Inquiry for me since mine hasn't started production yet, and it still shows up in the Exec Pkg on my order (maybe he should see what happens if he removes it...)

Definitely confusing. I think another member "Johanva" received his MY18 and they were the Non adaptive LEDs with his.

My bad...you are correct and thanks for the clarification. Edited my original reply post to reflect 5AC as automatic high beams.

There's no confusion. This only applies to U.S.-spec vehicles. Johanva is from "over there" - wherever over there is - where BMW uses that funny speedometer with the really big numbers on it.

If you remove Exec package you likely lose the camera that enables the auto-highbeam. This isn't that big of a deal... but there should be some other more advanced lighting things that can be coded (standard on European cars) that require the camera to be in place.

So if you don't give a crap about the 552 LEDs beyond the hexagonal halos, then by all means drop Exec. If you want the fancy LEDs because you want to enable this kind of stuff, then you still need Exec package.

I'm taking it regardless because I want backup sensors and the heated steering wheel...

I'm somewhat surprised they are including the same light units on all cars though, presumably the base units they originally claimed we'd get in the US would be cheaper... but I suppose it depends on how they are put together. If they were just taking the old dynamic-turning Xenon housings and changing the light source to LED, I think that would save them a lot of money. OTOH, maybe they had already used up their supply of this setup and decided to give the US the other lights? Or maybe the "old housing with new LED source" glared too much for DOT regulations and they had to make a last minute change to use the other housing (which was presumably ground-up designed for LED and US lighting regulations)?

The world may never know...

Yeah I'm actually still debating. I have a little bit more time left as I'm week 38. I live in San Francisco so the heated steering wheel would come in handy. The fact that the Exec package went up slightly in price. For one, backup camera are now standard in the US, and two, they lumped in the 552 LED adaptive headlights which actually are a no cost feature.

On a side note, anyone have any experience with auto high beams? Wondering how well they actually work or if they are more of an annoyance than a usable feature.

Hmmmmm...so the price of the exec package went up for '18 but two things are now standard, backup camera and adaptive headlights. I wonder if BMW NA plans to add something to the exec package that would better justify the cost increase.

I saw a picture the other day with it being black. I will see if I can find the post, something about the US gets the black under it, and it looks much better that way IMO.
