I have an M235, the N55 is strong but not special, nothing like the N54 and miles below the S55 in character.
Adding 40 hp to that engine won't give it the character it lacks I'm afraid.
It still won't build revs fast enough, it still won't have the middle of the range torque of the other two twin turbo motors, and it still will run out of breath over 5k rpm.
All that depends on how they modify it. Might be more than just a re-tune. We don't really know.

The N55 makes more mid-range torque over the N54, especially with the mid range overboost.
No it doesn't, they both have peak torque below 1500 RPM but ask anyone who has owned both engines how much harder the N54 pulls at 40 MPH in 6th gear on the freeway

Has your assessment taken into account that some of the internals of the N55 have been modified for the M2?

I'm looking forward to what the M division does to the N55. Updated with some S55 components, mmm....we'll see. I'm remaining optimistic that it'll deliver in the M fashion.

That's true, which is why I said I was skeptical but still hoping for the best.

I won't get an M2 if the engine is just a tuned N55 without internal enhancements. If that's what BMW does, then for me, an M3 becomes a better value for money (and a better sporty car overall)

Incorrect

http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews...5is_dyno_test/

When rated the same, the N55 has a slightly higher peak torque that comes in at 2500rpm (not counting the tuned N54 in the 335is). The smaller twin scroll + VANOS give it much better throttle response and extra kick in the mid range. It dies up top, but thats to be expected.

And yes, I've driven both.

Hey, at least the N55 sounds better than the S55. I mean, it destroys it. Seriously, the N55 has a nice sporty grunt, the S55?...well, I recreate that sound on the toilet after a nice meal at Hacienda.

I hate to pile it on on the poor S55 because I don't really think it sounds all that bad in real life. Plus I fully expect the aftermarket companies to able to turn down the rasp (like they did on the E46 M3).

The hilarious part is that I saw Mission Impossible today. All the chase scenes involving the F80 had S65 induction sounds overlaid the whole time. Not one sniff of the S55 in the entire movie

Wait till he starts the car. You're like wait, I know that sound is awfully familiar

This is where I'm at with it. I have an E46 M3 that I've owned for a few years and I'm ready to buy this car, but damn it's going to be hard to justify imo if it weighs 3450 lbs and as a 2016 model has an N55 with superficial mods.

Hard to argue with dyno facts but my experience is not the same. I agree that my M235 has better throttle response than my 2008 N54 335, but I still maintain that the 335 pulled harder in high gear on the freeway. Maybe it's a placebo effect or maybe I only remember the 335 when it had Vishnu proceed and down pipes installed.
