Engine light on

This is a strange one. The engine light is on but the car is showing no problems. Drives fine, nothing in the check control, any ideas?

I would check your gas cap. A cap that isn’t sealed will give you a check engine light.

Gas cap was sealed.

The only thing I can think of is that since the last service, it has been rough when starting up. Almost like it is misfiring. Only on cold startups, however.

I guess I'll take it in.

A disconnected MAF sensor will throw CEL without iDrive warning too.

I would check for codes with a tool capable of reading BMW error codes. Post them here and we can advise.

I don't have any tools to read codes unfortunately. I may swing by a local indy mechanic to see if he will read them for me. I have the car set to go in on Wednesday.

I will report back if possible.

If you have a windows laptop and enet cable, I can help read codes remotely. But if the car is still covered by warranty, then I'd let them worry about it. Unless they screw it up more.

That's the plan.

The local indy shop wanted $100 just to diagnose the code. No thanks! Appointment is 8am Wednesday morning.

Getting a loaner as well so they can keep it as long as needed.

And of course now the light is off.

I'll take it in still just to be safe.

Nah. I have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow at 8am. I'll have them run the code and fix what might be wrong.

The codes and environment conditions will be stored anyways, so they can see them.

Turns out there is a misfire in cylinder 5. I should have my car back by Monday.

My thoughts are that when they replaced the sparkplugs last visit, one of them may have been bad which probably caused the misfire.

It's amazing how many cars develop misfires after plug changes.

And I've never seen a "bad plug" in my life.

Pretty sure its all to do with mishandling coil packs by the techs. They have to be kept ultra clean, fresh gloves etc, no wiping with cloths or paper towells that leave fluff / oil film on them.

Any oil in inparticular on the coil pack silicon skirt or on the plug ceramic section can ruin it and lead to tracking and misfires.

You are absolutely right. When I spoke to my SA they stated they were changing out the coil packs.

I mean, it sucks, but it's a warranty repair so I have to have them take care of it because I don't want to spend any money out of pocket.

Here's to hoping they fix it correctly this time.
