Help with my brakes squeaking??

Hi guys,

Have had my front brake pads replaced twice due to vibrations when breaking at 50+ mph but have also dealt with brake squeaking for the past year or so. I don’t drive the car a lot but I want to finally get this fixed and need advise on how or what to do.
The dealer says that they do not cover brake noise so what is my next move?

Below is a video of the noise I deal with every time I drive after 5 mins or so. I’ve noticed it goes away a bit after a car wash but eventually always comes back.

About a dozen threads covering this topic, do a quick search for more info. It's fairly typical. Properly bedding in your brakes may help. I think there are some aftermarket pad recommendations too.

They squeak. BMW even made a brochure to hand out to clients complaining about it. If you didn't get one, go back to your service advisor and ask for one. It basically says "M brakes squeak. It's normal in our opinion and that is the only one that matters. Have a nice day"

Yes, they squeak. After a good jet wash mine stop squeaking but it only lasts for a short time. A couple of abs test stops will help too but the reprieve is short lived.

I thought it was normal for performance brakes to squeak

I’ve heard that it’s normal to squeak but I didn’t think 3 years in I’d be hearing it every single time I come to a stop. Guess that really is just the way it is if I’m not able to get on the highway every drive and give it a few good brakes.

Unfortunately you have to use them like they were intended every once in a while or they will squeal. Go through a good bed in process. Let them cool and they will be good for a little while.

You seem to be doing all city and parking driving? Sure they will squeal.

Where is the fast out of town runs and hard braking? That will sort them out.

Mines started squeaking when my car hit 500 miles. I didn’t even bother to take it to the dealership. The squeaking comes and goes during the 3 years I have had the car. Almost 32k miles and still on the same brake pads since day 1.

The stock brakes pad compound throws a lot of dust & I found them to be rather sensitive & grabby. It's the excessive amount of dust that causes the squeal.

To address these issues I installed a set of HWAK Ceramic brake pads front & rear... Part #'s: (Front - HB828Z.760 Rear - HB193Z.670)

All of the issues mentioned above were resolved.
The only caveat is that for the rear pads there is no provision for the wear sensor, which for me wasn't a big deal as I just tied it off to the side.

BTW, These pads are available from AMAZON

Good luck!

I've learned over time that when I get squealing brakes when coming to a stop, it's time to wash the car. The squealing then goes away. I'm guessing it has to do with brake dust accumulation.

I found that also. The problem is, it comes back really fast. The more light braking and city driving you do, the worse it is.

I switched to Carbotech 1521 last weekend and the brakes have been 100% silent since.

A lot less bite. Mostly for the better, but in the cold and wet so far I've had to make sure I tap them to kind of get them dried off a bit because the bite is definitely not like the stock pads. I only have 200 miles on them so far though so it may improve also.

Like someone said, plenty of threads on the topic. I take mine to a low-traffic road and do 4-5 hard stops from 40-50 mph. That gets rid of the squeal. It usually comes back in less than a month, and then I repeat the process. Annoying, but it is what it is.

Are the hard stops to complete 0 or to like 10mph?

I've noticed getting a car wash more often helps too

Hard on brakes, stay out of abs, don't come to a stop. Quickly get back up to speed and do it again. A lot of bed in procedures suggest 10 to 20 cycles. The goal of getting enough heat into the pads to transfer material to the disc. Higher speeds make this easier, but more difficult to do safely and legally.

And don't come to a full stop during the cycles or for at least 10 minutes after you do it.

Here's a very good video, a bit of overkill if you don't track, but it shows the process and you can just do 5 or 6 cycles. Trigger warning: seeing AP brakes may cause sudden wallet-lightening.

My own method is to slow to about 10 mph, for no other reason than to avoid shifting to 1st gear. There may be a scientific reason to explain why a complete stop is better than down to 10 mph, or vice versa. But this method works for me every time. I brake hard enough that the ABS starts to engage.

Once they start squealing I haven't noticed a car wash helping at all, but then I'm not scrubbing the rotors.

A manual car wash jet spray on the rotor at the caliper works temporarily. I doubt an automated car wash or home wash will clean them enough.

It is the rotors rusting up that does it, so any washing likely will have a similar effect.
