New owner, engine noise question M2C
Hi guys,
New owner and new to M performance coming from the Audi dark side. Love the car but just want to question something. I have a ticking noise that comes from the engine when giving the car any gas. It’s consistent and sounds like direct fuel injectors to me as it gets fast and slightly louder when any pressure is applied to the throttle. It’s not noticeable at idle, but can be heard when driving and the windows are up. All rev’s and speeds, it’s not a knocking noise and it doesn’t sound like a problem. Just want to query if this is a normal characteristic? If not I will run it to the local deal but I have a feeling they will say it’s normal. Thanks! |

First, congrats on the new purchase!
I’ve noticed mine has a very faint rattle-like noise around 3.3-4k rpm. It almost sounds like a lifter noise... Whatever it is, it’s an unpleasant noise and of course the dealer can’t find anything wrong. |

I have not noticed this OP, and I always drive with my windows down. Will keep an ear open for this.

Congrats on the new car.
I do not recall ever hearing anything like this on my car. Did you put low octane fuel in?

Did the dealer find anything? Did you find out if it was an issue? I have noticed the same sort of ticking sound... but assuming its not a reason for concern and likely due to direct injection system or valves/lifters?

Yeah I would say that sounds like what I am referring to, but can hear it when driving. From what I understand it is direct injection and/or valves but was just curious if anyone could confirm or if dealer told him otherwise. I'm 95% sure though its normal and nothing to be worried about.

I own three BMWs, and frankly, they all have loud engines - a 2013 328i, a 2006 330xi, and a 2020 M2c. The sound of the BMW engines was jarring for me as well, as I came from Hondas and Nissans where their engines are so quiet you can barely hear them running. I can live with the engine noise as BMWs are so much fun. Last edited by TheKingStampede; 11-05-2023 at 03:30 PM.. |

This is a normal noise. That last one has a faint hint of the exhaust cam carrier noise that is not normal though. Here is a good video of what's not normal - it's a metallic rapping at camshaft speed (1/2 engine), slower than the injectors. If you have this noise, it's easiest to hear with your ear at the passenger side wheel on cold start once idle has dropped a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/0FAOMywfZF8 I have this exact noise and have been recording it on my phone. Trying to piece together how to word it to my dealer to not get the run around from the service department... |
