Has anyone actually confirmed if istep version F020-19-03-522 can be tuned via OBD2 or bench unlock required? It seems to be right on the "edge" of OBD2 locking.

If your btld version ends in 002, it still requires bench unlock.

And yes, 19-03-522 will be on 002 bootloader.

Istep / ilevels are really easy to misreport, so going by istep is just silly when you can just look at dme btld version.

It really depends on the program you are using.

E-Sys, INPA, Tool32, ISTA, and other BMW oriented programs all report it, since the bootloader and software are all part of the software version reporting. This is the so-called SVK - Steuergeraete-Verbau-Kennung number.

I don't use the aftermarket mobile apps, but Carly and Bimmerlink could possibly report those as well.

UPDATE June 2021 Apparently, updated ISTEP version DOES NOT ALWAYS exclude OBD Flash possibility. Flashing lock actually depends on the bootloader version. If you contact BootMod3 and have an ENET cable, they can tell you if its possible or not. Source: Just flashed my F80 M3 with latest ISTEP. However, this should not apply for 2020+ Cars with new DME although Gx DME's have been cracked as of late

Has this method of determining whether or not the car can be flash tuned been confirmed? My istep version is F020-18-07-521. And my BTLD version ends with 001.

Based on this thread, my car can be flash tuned correct? I want to confirm this before making the purchase. Thanks!

Just bought it and attempted to flash the Stage 0+ (M2 CS) tune with no luck. It gets to 1% and then fails. I tried it 3 times before just giving up. I was able to flash it back to stock and relock the DME.

I do not know what the issue is. I turned off the firewall on my computer and ensured all doors were closed, drivers belt was clicked in, etc. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks in advance.

I found Chrome problematic.
The browser needs full cookie access etc i set up a copy of Firefox with all security off just for BM3.

Have you tried "download & flash later" then flash from the downloaded tab?

They always reccomend that way.

Else put in a support ticket, they're very good.

I recently had a remote session where they took over my laptop to sort a flash fail

and more importantly - what increases the btld version? How can I avoid that while flashing with Esys to a recent istep, for example?

Why update? If it ain't broke don't mess with it!

Mines still as factory 2018, never updated at all, everythign works just fine including OBD tuning.

But If you want to update particular modules then I think you can do that, just dont update the DME.

I want to flash my DME to proper, factory software. I have a suspicion its currently coded as an xdrive even though its an rwd. My dme unit throws error about missing VTG transfer case and idrive oil measurement always shows less than the actual amount.

Id try to flash to the same istep, unless there is a different way for my case

Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone who comes across this.

Recently my istep version was changed due to some 3g update by the dealer, but the BLTD version seems to have stayed the same. i used the obd2 connector and bootmod3 agent to check this.

Does anyone know if there another way (Bimmerlink, Bimmercode, OBDlink CX) to pull the BTLD version from the DME? I don't have BM3 so was hoping to figure out another way to pull the data.

Edit - none of these will work to pull BTLD version. I emailed Bimmercode and OBDLink tech support.
I'm downloading E-Sys instead and going that route.

Iirc you don’t need to buy bootmod3 to download the software and check

like dav3 said, you dont need bm3 to check. just get the OBD reader they recommend and download their bm3 agent. when you connect to the car and run the agent, it will tell you the version.
