Engine flutter at track

Was at Chuckwalla Raceway this past weekend. Was super hot, 105f. I can only assume 15-20 degrees hotter on track. Im not sure if the issue I was having has to due with the heat but I’ve seen many people upgrade their intercooler and heat exchanger, claiming this area to be a short coming of the stock S55 platform. Before I make the purchase I’d thought to get your opinions first.

Coming out of a corner on heavy to full throttle, the engine felt and sounded like a flutter or bogging with no increase in power. I’m not sure how else to explain it. I’m not sure if it’s something to due with the heat soak effecting the turbos or maybe possibly a fueling issue. (Never below a 1/2 tank.) Or Maybe a turbo leak? It would happen randomly at different parts of the track but always on heavy throttle at high rpm, 6500 and higher. Sometimes it was short, 1/2 second, others it went as long as 2 seconds, then the power would slowly kick in. No error codes reported.

Has any one else experienced anything like this?

Engine Mods:
BotMod stage 2 tune
Eventuri intake and charge pipes
Turner oil catch can
Pedal Comander
Catless down pipes
Catless, non-resonated Eisenmann race exhaust

Was it a right hand corner and were you low on fuel? Sounds like it may be breaking up from fuel starve which is a known issue when running with low fuel due to location of pickup.

Also, it’s hilarious you’re using a pedal commander. Aren’t those marketed for V6 Dodge Chargers?

We were going counter clockwise so mostly left handers but, yes I do remember two very distinctive right handers where it happened. I was trying to maintain half a tank through out the day by adding fuel in-between sessions. It may have gotten to 1/4 tank, or maybe a smidge lower. Would that have done it?

Ha, funny you say that about the pedal commander. I had one on my Mustang GT and liked it so much, I put one on the M2C almost 2 years ago. I completely forgot about it until now.

You were going counterclock wise? I never knew they flipped the course like that.

Yes at Chuckwalla the club/organizer of the event has the option to select which direction.

Quite possibly. When my 2017 did it, it threw a drivetrain error and had to be limped in but I don’t think that’s the only way this issue is experienced.

If you’re running hard in 100*+ ambient temps an upgraded intercooler is probably welcome.

I've experienced this at the track when I was low on fuel! especially on a high G corner. Car seems to like it the most at half tank.

Weather it's from the heat or low fuel, I don't see how switching to a different map would change anything.

Neither due to heat nor due to low fuel level, an engine does not flutter, due to excess torque / excess back pressure yes.

This sounds like high IATs may be causing misfires and the car is pulling timing/boost. Next time you track get some datalogs.

Counterclockwise actually flows better imo.

It's a bidirectional track. Many modern tracks are designed to work both directions. There's nothing directional about chuckwalla.

Yeah i know, just never did or heard about it there. I think i'd prefer the usual clockwise but i'd have to try it.

Had a similar problem with my F80 back in 2017 in the midrange of the RPM on full throttle. I had 2 issues that got fixed at once so unfortunately unsure what the source was but I'll mention both for your consideration.

Issue #1: Charge pipe. I also had an upgraded charge pipe and found it to have a small leak so I reinstalled with new fittings and it better sealed the pipe.

Issue #2: Map. I was running an OTS E30 blend map and after discussing with support, came to the conclusion that the map was outdated and inefficient based on my engine, transmission, and location combination. E30 blend is important to note as it leaves room for user error, unrelated to the map itself.

Hope this helps.

What settings are you using on track? MDM, full nannies off (DSC off, etc.)?

With the nannies on, this car will purposely cut power mid-way through corners if it feels like there's not enough traction, etc.
