Why did BMW chose the tires sizes for M2C?
Hi Guys,
I am trying to understand why One of the head designers in charge of the competition program said that any bigger then a 265 would not fit. I'm trying to understand BMWs M divisions logic on the tire choices they went with. Even the BMW M performance wheels are only 10 inches wide in the rear and 9 inches wide at the front. It's going with a tire on the rear that's wider then 265mm would hinder the play fullness with the vehicle is it a better option to go to stay with a 265mm? As going with a bigger option could decrease the ability to have more fun with the vehicle. |

i don't know which "head designer" told you this, but he must've been pretty drunk, or had taken a couple of good puffs from some purple kush.
You can fit 275/35, 285/30, and even 295/30 on the rears of our cars. If he meant 265/35 in the fronts than yes, although there are a couple of folks here running 275's up front as well. I myself am running 295/30 rears in stock rims and suspension, and works perfectly

I think there's a little bit of marketing BS, a good bit of science, and a lot of factory constraint.
If I recall the M2 was at the width limit for the assembly line in the factory. BMW seems to spend a fair bit of time ensuring their cars exceed the grip limit in a controlled manner. Vehicle dimensions, and weight will play it's part, but tire size can really play a big part in how the car "let's go". Finally I think they over market the balance a bit and really don't want to step on the m4 too much so they limit the grip a bit. My 2 cents from monitoring the M2 development over the last few years. |

Many people are running 255/35/19 front and 275/35/19 in the rear with no problems. That is what I am thinking of doing when my stock tires wear out.

Ran that setup on the M2. I think the handling may have been a tad worse but definitely no improvement except the look. Really hate the stretched look of stock tires. |

IMO there are 2 reasons, besides the rumor that they would cause issues in Leipzig.
1. It would perform even more closely to the M3 and M4 in magazine tests. 2. Narrower tires usually make a car feel more eager to change direction and the breakaway characteristics might be favorable. |

Wider tires are slightly heavier and have a higher rolling resistance.
People on here would probably complain about both.

I bet the next time around, when the next gen M2 is designed from scratch and has a longer gestation period, the wheel housing and options will grow exponentially in girth. |

If fitted with 245/265 - complain about it being undertired and lack of traction If fitted with 255/275 - complain about it being too heavy and hard to break loose |

(source: here) By the way: on my ex M2 and current M2C: 255/35 R19 front + 275/35 R19 rear = zero issues (see the dedicated thread here).
