Tinting recommendations

So whilst awaiting delivery, I've been checking some places for a potential window tint to deal with the upcoming Melbourne summer. After spending some time on the whirlpool forums, I narrowed it down to this particular company which was given rave reviews due to their professionalism, quality of work, and their allowing you to watch while they work on your car. I contacted this particular place with the following email:

Hi ***,

Just trying to do some research with regards to having my BMW M2 tinted. I'm looking for maximum heat rejection. What would you recommend, and approximately at what price? If you have something similar to say the Formula One Stratos tint, I'd be interested.

Thanks!

And this was the response I received:

Hi *****,
Thank you for your enquiry on the M2.

Let me tell you something about your car you won’t read anywhere else as you are obviously doing your research and shopping around.

I know a contract tinter who works at a BMW dealership and he has had a couple of major issues with this car. Why?

The film installation has to be applied wet and computers, amps etc. don’t go too well together as you could imagine.

He has fried two cars at a dealer cost of $1,500 each.

What now has to happen with BMW’s installation on the M2 is that their service department has to “gut” the rear of the car “to the body shell.”

Do you want that? I think not!

And as such I don’t have that facility to disassemble that either to factory standards and therefore I politely must refuse them.

I’m sure you’re are in agreeance with me on this and I’d never want to have a situation where my excellent reputation is compromised by a car that imho is not ideally suited to aftermarket tint.

Having said that I’ll do your Tesla which I did yesterday.
End of email.

BTW, I don't even have a Tesla, so, not sure where that was coming from. But.... I'm not sure how to react. I did send an email back asking how I would go about tinting my car, but received no response. I have never heard of a car not being able to be tinted due to electronics. Yet somehow, a Tesla can be done which is full of electronics. Unless I'm missing something?

TLDR - where is a good place I can get a tint done in Melbourne?

When applying tint they use liberal amounts of water and suspect in unlucky cases the water is following a path to where some electronics reside. Cars are water resistant outside in, not inside out.

Would like to know more on the cases though from anyone having a similar issue.

PS: the Tesla comment is likely a copy and paste of the detail

No prob. Happy to recommend people that do good work.

Given I had the same email I also get the frustration and annoyance that someone who is massively respected in the industry suggesting that bmw pull the whole rear of the car out to tint... which is complete garbage. I asked my dealer and they literally laughed

I too got the same email, and so I then searched this forum and sure enough, there are many reports of blown amps after tints being applied. I decided it would be easier just to get my dealer to tint it.

What kind of tint is the dealer putting on? And what price if you don't mind sharing?

All cars have electronics these days. Does that mean in the next 5 years, all cars will need to have tinting done by the dealer?

I think the brand was Nextek Nanotek. From memory I think it was about $600.

With the M2 - apparently water from the window can trickle down directly in to the amp which is uncovered and exposed.

Im also researching Car Tint places in Melbourne for a M2C.

Was it Rob @ CarTint that refused the M2?

Any other recommendations, everyone happy with Liquid R Tinted?

Cheers

The exposed amps are a common/known problem. My tinter blew my amp whilst tinting my car and I took it straight back to the dealer who promptly replaced the amp and placed a cover over it to minimise future risk - all under warranty.

Trent is really good and uses quality Suntek.
He has done a few M2C's including mine.

Had my M2C tinted by Ben @ TintFX on Fri. He did a great job and is very fastidious with his work. Recommend him to anyone looking for tinting needs, was very careful with the car and looked after it like it was his own. Llumar Ceramic tint used.

On an extra note, i pulled the boot liner apart before i went for easy access to the amp of the left side. I mentioned to Ben about the possibility of the amp getting some trickel down water during the process from the inside of the window. He said he would be careful with use of water on the rear screen. I put a small towel over the amp once the car was off to protect it during the tint process and put a second towel in the other side which is very easily accessed by just pulling up on the storage bin behind the net (no liner removal required). Both towels were damp at the top at the wheel well arch after the process. Likely not enough to damage my amp at all, but i could easily see how a careless tinter using copious amounts of water would easily kill it.
