Putting a (boxed) bicycle in the M2; is it possible?
Howdy all,
Am slotted for ED pickup on Sept 17, and hoping during our ~ 900 miles of planned driving there to purchase a bicycle from Canyon (in Koblenz) en route to the Nurburgring and other places. The 'Bike Guard' box in which Canyon packages its road bikes is 59" x 10" x 33". Could any of you please measure the trunk/cargo space of your M2 (my presumption being the 2019 won't be different in this respect ) to see if such a box would fit? We did visit our local (San Antonio, TX) store with a mock-up box, but they only had regular 2 series inventory. It appeared that the width of the trunk opening is problematic (at the bottom, where it curves into the space ) and that the 10" height of the box will be difficult to push through because of the low 'package shelf' (or whatever you call the part these days underneath the rear window where the speakers are) combined with the rear seat angle when folded. I need to leave the boxed bike as-is, for shipment to the US after our trip, and it's pretty much inflexible given the thickness of the cardboard. Thanks in advance if anybody would care to measure their M2 trunk and cargo space and provide us the details. (FWIW, Canyon Germany will not ship their bikes to US customers, and the Canyon US division does not have, nor can they get, the bike I want...) |

Unfortunately I am 1400 miles away from my car otherwise I would help you out. I suspect however this will be tough if not impossible to get the bike to fit in a box. The opening to the trunk is pretty narrow and I suspect the length of the box will be an issue also because of the angle. I can tell you that a 2 series is a 2 series in terms of dimensions so if you had a tough time with the mock up you will with your M2. One option would be to buy a roof rack and mount the box on the roof like a surf board.

I put my bike in the trunk (56 frame) and it just fits ( in at angle and rotate). I highly doubt a boxed bike will make it

The bike will fit in out of the box and with the front wheel off. I carry mine all the time like that. Off course you need to have the rear seats down.
If you need the box to ship the bike back to the US, good luck. It definitely won’t fit because the trunk opening is too small. |

Cool idea and Koblenz is lovely. If you go from Nürburg to Koblenz, drive the river valley. Very pretty.
I would say this is going to be difficult at best. The dimensions and geometry should be largely the same as a current 2er as, for 2018, people are using some of the standard 2er parts on their M2's. Attached are a couple of pics. As you saw on the 2's you tested, the trunk opening is narrower at the bottom. So you would have to go in high. Thus likely means that you won't be able to go forward enough. One option might be to remove the rear seats and put the on top of the bike but, we'll, if you plan on a rear seat delete anyway.... First pic is width of trunk opening closer to the top. Last pic is close to the bottom. Middle pic is depth to the back of the drivers seat. I'm tall so you might get more. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm not expecting the bike to fit at this point, so my hope is that Canyon will ship the bike to Italy where we finish our trip.
We're dropping the car off in Zurich (because we don't want to pay the ~ $900 extra to drop the car off in Italy) and then taking a train to Milan (to save the ~ $1k surcharge for renting a car in Switzerland and returning it in Italy). Renting a station wagon in Milan and then onwards to Assisi (to meet family) for a week. During which time I'm hopeful Canyon can/will deliver the bike. Then stick it in the station wagon for when we return the car to the airport in Rome, and pray the luggage handlers are gentle. (It could happen, right?) We'll see... |

The OP wanted to fit the bike in the car WITH the shipping box. This will not fit. My road bike fits with the front wheel off, but I don't see any room for a bike in a box. It's too wide, and I think it would be tough to slide it in because it is rigid.

To clarify: The bike I want is NOT available in the US, or will Canyon ship it to the US. I need to leave the bike in the box for transport (via two commercial flights) back to the USA.
I originally hoped that the bike would fit, then I could just leave it in the car during its shipment stateside. Which, as it turns out, is not a possibility because they want nothing extra in the car, and even want the owner to remove the emergency triangle, etc. if I correctly recall the ED shipping FAQ. |

Just get a roof rack from BMW. I use their stock rails for all of my bikes.

A roof rack might allow you to transport the bike in the box. As you found out, BMW will not allow you to ship anything with the car and this includes permanently installed accessories. So, you would also need to remove the rack before dropping the car off for shipment unless the factory does the install.

There are a couple of European proxies online that will get the bike to you. Not super cheap but it beats the hassle. A coworker of mine did it for a specific handmade cruiser bike from NL. I think it was around 7% of the cost of the bike plus shipping.

Their 'Endurace' CF SLX 9.0 -- with full Dura Ace component group. Canyon's US division (based in San Diego) doesn't have any plans to stock this particular version, and cannot import one just for me. I want the mechanical shifting components instead of the electronic stuff.
I did check with a couple of bike shipping outfits, and the least expensive was USD $600. Ay caramba! FYI, bringing the bike on our (two) flights home will cost $155 total. So, we'll save enough to pay for premium petrol during our ~ thousand miles of driving before we drop the car off. At present, premium gas is about USD 6.63/gallon in Munich area. Or, I could spend that money on a bike transport case like this: https://www.probikekit.com/cycling-a...?rctxt=default |

So you'll opt for the inconvenience of lugging a boxed bike around Europe to save $445 on shipping a $6k bike? If it was me I'd buy it, arrange shipping & get on with enjoying my vacation.

The question was about fitting the bike in a specific car, not "what would you do". I don't care what you would do. Most people wouldn't ED a BMW, nor collect credit card points to fly business class (for $22.80 out of pocket for both of us), nor ride a bicycle for fitness (including the Markleeville "Death Ride"), nor take their car's wheels off a few times a year to wash/wax the rim interior.
If it was easy, it wouldn't be as satisfying. YMMV. |
