Yes, noticed this almost right away. Even called my SA to ask about it. He said normal, especially for an M car. I think it's a combination of less sound insulation in the car and possibly just a tighter M diff. Although I had a mechanical LSD on my 135 and never heard anything like it.
I got used to it quickly and now just kind of think it adds to the sportiness of the car.

Thank you again for your replies...I'll take it as normal from now on since you all have the same sort of noises.
Recently I read an info by a guy which had his transmission replaced at the dealership. They confirmed that there are optimized exchange parts regarding noises where the whining is less noticeable or it occurs in those rev ranges where you can't really hear it. This theory is confirmed by as7920's statement.

Have fun and enjoy every single ride in your M.

Greetings from Germany,

Jürgen

I have about 4,000kms on the car. Bunch of mods, so maybe they drown it out...
Same issue here in the UK with a RHD LCI. An annoying whine coming from the passenger side sounds like: "too noisy, too bumpy, too fast etc."

Has anyone confirmed if this whining noise is normal? Mine is doing it at around 50 / 60 mph (have tried it in 4th and 5th gear) when going on and off the throttle, more noticeable when warmed up. Only very slight noise but doing it all the same. Car has only done 370 miles and is a May 2018 build DCT.

I really would appreciate your opinion :-)

The diff whine supposedly is normal according to my service center. They said they had another MY17 M2 in and it had the same sound. This is what they told me..

I have a 2018 DCT, and I'm only at 1500km, but I've heard, since new, a very soft groaning sound from the differential on light acceleration from low speed. It may also be there on harder acceleration, but drowned by engine noise. Is this what the others hear?
On my old e90 M3s (I had a manual, and a DCT), I also heard sounds from the diff, but only on tighter turns. Those sounds never went away during the time I had both cars. I know BMW had a fix for that (a change of Diff fluid).

All these sounds are normal. We have been conditioned to think that modern cars are totally noiseless.

Remember there are thousands of rotating parts meshing with each other. Drive shafts, differentials, etc. All will make some noise.

Unless it is something really loud leave it be. Step on the accelerator and you won't hear any whining.

When we picked up our M2 3 weeks ago, on the initial test drive of the car, our sales guy mentioned that the whining from the rear diff is normal. This is even before I heard it! I love all the mechanical sounds this thing makes, reminds me of a much more sophisticated 2003 WRX that I used to own!

I think I read they basically attached the rear trailing arms to the chassis with no flex bushings so you you really feel what the rear end is doing.

My 2019 M2 Comp manual is doing exactly the same whining noise - between 55 and 60 mph only. It is annoying, as this is often UK traffic cruising speeds.
Has anyone had a cure to stop this?
There was a cure for the E46 involving some sticky strips, if I remember correctly.

This is the mod for the e46 I was referring to:
