Cool Fast Nurburgring lap in M2 with race driver, sub 8 minute

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I was over at the 'ring with some friends a couple of weeks ago one of which was Moran Gott who some of you may know as pretty handy behind the wheel of a car. Moran races in VLN and the 24Hour Nurburgring and is also a Ring Taxi driver for Apex Nurburg.

Now I've had my M2 for 2 1/2 months and have taken it to the 'ring twice now and considering it's bone stock apart from Pagid RS29s, Goodridge hoses and some better brake fluid I'm very impressed at how capable it is even on Continental Sport Contact 3 tyres.

My lap times have consistently been falling and I was feeling proud that I'd done an 8:12 lap in the car (down from 8:18 in my 135i but still trailing the 8:08 I achieved when I drove Baris' e46 M3 (xkalibar) I asked Moran if he could take me out in my car to show me what it's capable of.

Now this isn't a discussion on insurance, risk or any of that grown up nonsense! I trust Moran and his abilities and we of course had a gentleman's agreement should the unthinkable happen so please let's not even discuss this on this post.

Oh and yes I was wearing a helmet and he was not! It's a running joke with us as when he took me out for laps in the past in his e46 M3 and the Schirmer M235i I wore a helmet both times and he did not!

It's worth watching the post lap debrief as some of Morans comments are very interesting particularly what he says about the M3/M4 (of which the former he drives as a 'ring taxi and the latter races in 24 hour!)

Hope you enjoy and let me know your thoughts on the lap!

Great video, great driving, great conversation.

I was planning to go there this weekend but dunno what the weather will be.
Few months ago it was freezing there.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Glad you enjoyed guys.

He really is a bit of a character and I'm proud to call him a friend. He is of course an outstanding driver however even by his own admission there are some guys out there that are even faster (not many though!)

That's pretty much the full conversation post race, I only edited out inconsequential parts to make it a little shorter.

I was hoping to get a better time (than my PB) a couple of days ago when I was at the 'ring for a trackday but problems with a new set of tyres and some yellow flags put a stop to that although there were a few corners I've definitely improved on just from studying this video!

What time does he think he can achieve full stock on Michelins without a passenger and without traffic?

Nice lap!

My M2 is also stock with stock suspension and PSS tyres. My fastest BTG ringlap last year was 8.12min with my "manual" MY17 M2. DCT is faster on track and on the Nurburgring I guess it wil be +/- 10sec faster on a full lap with the same driver? Sometimes I time my laps also; but for me...it's not about the time...there are no prizes to win and it's all about the fun... The M2 is so much fun on and off track

Here is my 8.12min with Endless ME-20 pads in 2017, this year I fitted RS-29.

M Gott also managed 7.40min BTG with a standard M2 DCT with Toyo tyres

When are you going back to the ring?

Hey Franzino! I've seen your M2 video on YouTube before

I was at the 'ring last week for a trackday (third trip this year!) I'll be back again in July for some trackays - either the 16th July or the 27th July (or maybe even both!) I will also be there on the 3rd August (again another trackday)

The car is now wearing Michelin Cup2 tyres

Low 7m40s on these kind of tyres.

I mostly do tourist days once a month (on the more quiet saturdays) or an evening session (I live 2.30h drive from the ring). Because of my work it is difficult to book a trackday long in advance. My work schedule can change last minute and also the weather is a problem. I hate driving the ring in the rain! When you book a trackday in advance and it rains that day...then you have to go because; otherwise you payed for something you did not use. But maybe I'm going to do one this year...it al depends on my work schedule and if I''m not a lot in other country's.

I drive my M2 everyday whatever the weather....so CUP 2 is not a smart move in a rainy country like Belgium for everyday driving. I have CUP 2 on my Z4M and the difference is surely there on track. But I'm going to buy an extra set of 763M wheels with CUP 2 tyres this winter ...and if I do so; I wil probably upgrade the suspension also with the M perf suspension at the same time. I change my brake pads every time I go to track...so changing the wheels also is not a big issue then.

Is your M2 also your daily car?
