Rear ended (Need advice!)
Soooo 8 months into owning the "best car... in the world," I was rear ended on the Tollway headed home by an F-150 who just didn't know how to use his brakes... Anyway, I'm sitting in traffic, he hits me at ~30 MPH, I hit the Camry in front, and then he hits me one more time because he still couldn't find his brakes. Car didn't look too bad at first, but after Classic took it apart, it appears that literally everything except the frame is damaged (rear differential, both bumpers, lights, front and rear shock-absorbers, all of my mods and iND products, etc.) as you can see in the pictures and that it would be around $15k to repair the car. Classic already started working on the car but I'm asking y'all whether or not I should keep it. I absolutely love this thing but after all this damage I'm not sure it'd be the same. I can get a new '18 for sure but I would need a diminished value claim to make up for the difference in cost... Any thoughts on my next move? Keep the car and used diminished value to spice it up or swap for a new one?

That's a shame and I feel for you. My last two cars were totaled out from under me while playing crumple zone between two other cars.
I hope everyone involved is okay. Keep or sell is a decision you have plenty of time to make since the repairs will happen regardless. If it were me, I would see how the car drives and feels once you get it back and then make my decision. If you are thinking sell, get your name on the list now if you are thinking you want another new M2. On the positive side, you no longer need to dread the first scratch or ding ;^) |

As long as the engine has no issues, I would get it fixed... drive it. And trade it in for next car when time comes.

If it’s a good body shop with a great paint shop, chances are you won’t even be able to tell the difference. If you plan to get another M2, are the kind of person that keeps a car for a long time, then it’s financially sound to just keep this car. Besides, that F150 guy could find you again in your next car ...
Get it fixed and then decide. |

Sorry to see this! I see far too many pile ups on the DNT. Nobody bothers paying attention to driving anymore, they'd rather check their Instagram!
If I were in your shoes, I'd probably take the diminished value (depending on amount) for the car and continue driving it until the wheels fell off....hopefully from natural causes this time. Just be very picky about repairs.

I am sure that Classic is a BMW certified collision center, if so they will return it to factory specs. I got t-boned in my E90 3 series and a BMW collision center did the repairs, insurance wanted to do 14k worth of repairs, the collision center demanded they allow them to return it to factory specs which cost 25k. I was nervous I would get a mess back but the car was perfect and I am super OCD. I continued to drive that car for 170k before I sold it and it was perfect. No sense in getting rid of a car you love. Let them fix it and go out and enjoy it again.

If he was doing 30 and there is no panel damage, then those bumpers did an awesome job. I agree with th above post, if put back together right, it will be perfect. I have had 50/50 luck with that over the years (last two or 3 were repaired better than factory IMHO)

Since there is no frame damage, they should be able to fix it back to factory specifications.
But you should still file a diminished value claim. Usually it is about 50% of the cost of the repairs. There is no requirement that you sell the car to make a diminished value claim. |

I feel for you. Almost the exact same situation happened to me when I had an e46 M3 and a guy hit me in a mid-80’s Bronco and pushed me into the car ahead. After it was fixed by a very reputable body shop, it never drove or handled the same again. I took it back to the same shop several times and they checked it over; told me tolerences were better than factory spec and within something like 1/100 of a mm. It was all Greek to me, but because it forever changed the car I ended up selling it. Hope you have better luck.

Thanks for all the input guys! I definitely want to try the car after it's fixed before I make a decision on getting a new one... But the issue is that M2 (N55) production ends mid June and the car will be coming back late June at the earliest... Oh well... decisions decisions... Anyone got any advice on pursuing diminished value?

I thought that diminished value was state by state (or at least it used to be) - here in IL, when the wife's car was hit back in 2010, she was told that the only way to file a claim was to have sold it and proved diminished value (so an expert - be it the dealer or someone) has to give a written statement of how much the value has been diminished by the Carfax.
Oh, I mean accident

Same thing happened to me back in 2010 - an idiot rear-ended my '08 G35, pushed me into a gold Camry (go figure...), which got pushed into a Hummer H3. One idiot with expired license and lapsed insurance totaled three cars and dented one H3 bumper - all his fault. Almost felt a little sorry for him when he got cuffed on the side of the road for the expired license... until I called the number on the insurance card he gave me that still had a valid date on it but in fact had lapsed due to non-payment.

Didn't matter to him - except he was out his deductible. Long story short, you hit someone, it is your fault, even if it wasn't your fault - you then go after the other guy. Then again, I suspect it varies by state.
