Inspired by you all, I tried to do this. I was able to save tire pressure and radio stations but NOT able to save anything in Apple CarPlay. Simply said "unable to save".

Just use the media button on the steering wheel to scroll round input sources, I do all my audio selection that way.

Much easier than faffing with centre console buttons.

Do you have fullscreen carplay (late model year 2021)? AFAIK the same versions of iDrive that have 2/3rd screen carplay do NOT allow shortcuts into carplay.

I was finally able to make it work. Instead of saving it while on the sports display screen go back to the menu to pull up the sports display. With it highlighted then hold the button you want it to be saved on.

I don't have full screen CarPlay, but was hoping to get that update soon so I hope that isn't the case.

Ah, so it saves the shortcut to the selected item rather than the current window. That helps, thank you.

shortcut to CarPlay
radio presets (favorites)
Sports display
tire pressure
navigate home

I may be missing one...

I dont think you can do it with shortcut to carplay. I can only do shourtcut to carplay google map.

Shortcuts are made on iDrive menu items. Because there is a menu items to CarPlay navigation from within iDrive you can make a shortcut to that, but not other apps in CarPlay.

Thanks, this is the key piece I was missing. I just tried this out and the full list of shortcuts available are:

- carplay
- maps within carplay (google maps)
- phone within carplay

So if someone steals your car they press the no.1 button to find your house and burgle that too while your stuck elsewhere with no car...
