Autocar: M2 CS v 718 Cayman GTS v Alpine 110S

But in the end, these are very different sports cars that do their respective things in very different ways. So it's the Alpine that feels like the stranger in this group; I hope you've worked out as much already. The BMW is the emphatic and spectacular new friend you're growing to like more and more (and let's hope the affection grows with the upcoming next-generation M2). And the Porsche is the old mate, back from the wilderness and ready with your favourite old stories and gags.

Thanks for sharing. Good article. Great win here for the Cayman GTS. Given that, I’d imagine the GT4 would be an even clearer winner. I am glad the flat 6 engine returns for the GTS.

Agreed, the flat 4 S and GTS seemed to get universally panned in terms of emotion and sound.

One of these cars has four seats and is a considerably better car to live with. Not to mention it is way better looking. But I digress.

I don't think I've ever seen argument yet in any of the threads for a better option with usable back seats. As soon as that is a requirement, you are looking at an M2 of some variant. Everything else is either much larger, more expensive, or compromised in some other way.

Totally agree. I'm in the 5'10 camp and the front and back are absolutely liveable for me.

How are cars like an 8 series not able to offer the same.

Yes she's not the lightest but if your after 5 seats, the M2 competitors shrink away very very quickly. (When price/performance/space is considered)

That's why I don't understand a lot of the reviews. It's a strong testament to the m2 variants that they are put up against legit 2 seat sports cars. It's a further feather in the cap of BMW that the CS is able to compete with the cayman on track in factory form. A car that can legitimately carry 4 adults and groceries be compared to a 2 seat purpose built sports car.

Seatbelts:
  • F87 M2 and F82 M4 are 4-seaters;
  • F80 M3 is a 5-seater.

Well, technically, there are 5 seats. But only 4 seatbelts.

A passenger in the middle can get a cans massage though (apart from being ejected through the windscreen).

I have to somewhat disagree here? Maybe more devil's advocate?

What do we know about the M2? It's BMWs most sporting vehicle and one of the lightest they make. The M2 CS is the most track oriented, and focused car BMW makes right now. They pulled out all the stops.
The M2 CS can do a decent job keeping up with the GTS because it boasts materially better power figures - nearly 100 more horsepower and right around 100 more lb-ft torque along with it (based on the recent dyno). Plus a DCT transmission vs a much slower manual in the GTS. We already know that the M2 CS having around 85 more hp and same 100 more lb-ft torque vs the GT4 is considerably slower and that's with the GT4 not yet having the best dual-clutch transmission available on the market in it yet. So it takes the M2 CS considerably more just to keep up with what isn't even the top range of the Cayman line, unlike the CS which is far closer to maxed out than either the GTS or GT4 is/are.

At the same time, the argument could also be steered towards the angle that there are more luxurious, more spacious cars like the Panamera turbo or M5C that not only do the practicality & people carrying thing, and luxury better, but also are much faster in just about any scenario than the much more focused M2 CS or many sports cars. The Panamera turbo which weighs 4600 lbs is faster than any M car BMW current makes (or has made incl the M4 GTS) but also many super cars.

I think the point is, you can surely get into some sedans that are fast - faster than sports and super cars because they boast much more power to make up for it but will never evoke the same experience.

At the same time, do you think you're going to care when you get your M2 CS that a big, 4200 lb M8 Competition or M5 Competition can beat you at the track given they have massive amounts more power (same thing as the M2 CS vs 718 GTS)? No, because the M2 CS will be much more fun at doing it, just like I think they said here - the GTS was just a more emotional and best driver's car, and those are aspects that you can't make up with power and torque figures.

Another CS v Cayman review.

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-...-gts-4-0/42914

Usual conclusion. The GTS is not that much fun on the road as you never get out of 2nd and never gets into the zone but great on the track.

I test drove my M2c immediately after testing an M3 and it was so much more engaging to drive. The same week I drove an RS3, a 911s, AMG C43, and an M340i and only the comparable or rather better ride (that I could discern from short test drives) was the Porsche. The 911 was 25k more than the M2c (and a gorgeous blue) but the real deterrent was way my iced tea cans just rolled around on the back seat Willy-nilly. So naturally I optioned the can-massage feature and went with the M2.

I mean that really is the only reasonable deciding factor in my book. #noteasecuritynocar

IMO The AMG isn’t even worth the test drive. The Audi is not bad if you are into the ugly stealth look. The 911 would be my choice if I could afford it. But before I got a M2CS, I’d probably get the Audi TT RS. It’s faster than the M2CS or my M3C and is much more nimble and is probably the fastest car in its price range.
I’ve actually thought about replacing my M3C with the TT RS as my daily, since we’ve got the SUv for bigger family trips and my kids are only in my M3C a couple of times a week - although they wouldn’t be very comfortable in the back of a TT RS (they are 10 and 12 and it would be even harder in another couple of years) - they already complain about how the back seats in the M3C aren’t as comfortable as our Lexus SUV my wife drives.

I want a smaller more sporty daily for myself, that can pull kid duty a few times a week and some shorter family drives. I really like the look of the CS but can’t justify the price. TT RS in the other hand are priced just under/equivalent to M2C, but the M2C has crap interior vs the CS and my full merino leather M3C.

Basically, I’m down to keeping the M3S or get the TT RS (unless they M2CS is heavily discounted - which isn’t going to happen in my area at least since between them the two dealerships in town are only getting 4).

The plus from the switch to TT RS for me, it’s AWD and we pretty much have winterish weather 8 months out of the year. It turns on a dime and sticks to the road like glue. Oh and it a a lot quicker than my M3C for daily street use. The downside very tight in the back and no HUD.

Laat Optik is to hold on to the M3C another year and see if I like the new G82 M4.

As great as the 2er is, I wish BMW would actually build a proper Sports Car competitor to the 718/911, just imagine how great it could be... too bad it will never happen

One of the better comments I've seen here. Get out there & experience all the options on offer. If you can't afford something better or it doesn't suit entirely then so be it, that doesn't mean you need to make an argument for why what you chose is better. Sorry but brand loyalty (fanboys) equates to nothing more than inexperience & lack of knowledge imo. For the record if it were a financial option for me presently I'd take the Alpine, then the Cayman then the M2, & I own an M2!. Oh & I've driven the TTRS & its a brilliant car imo.

They have the chassis (Z4), maybe we will see it in Supra form :
