(Brush On) Exhaust Paint
My M2C should be here in a few weeks. One of the first things I want to do is paint the muffler black. Spraying it (canned paint) makes me nervous, even with having access to getting the car up and doing some significant masking.
Has anyone tried a high temperature (brush on) engine-type paint? Something like this? https://www.amazon.com/POR-15-42038-...31657819&psc=1 or https://www.amazon.com/POR-15-44116-...262357&sr=8-15 or https://www.amazon.com/Eastwood-Sati...262357&sr=8-23 |

Curious whether rocks would chip and sand erode over time. Protective gear required I would guess. Breathing and eyes. Spray applied same concerns?

I wouldn't be nervous-- I was in the same boat with my M2C and attacked it on a sunny, warm day. It turned out outstandingly well.
1. Prep exhaust well. I used acetone, followed up by isopropyl alcohol. 2. Mask underside AND any area you might get spray on. On the M2C, there's a pretty good seam that runs horizontally around the exhaust-- that's what I used as my "cut line". I used fairly lightweight plastic sheeting (so I could get it over the top of the exhaust, around pipes, etc) and painter's tape. I used disposable rubber gloves around the exhaust tips. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO IT RIGHT. The job is 80% prep, 20% painting. Some people have scuffed up the exhaust to enhance adhesion, but I didn't feel that was needed. 3. I did several light coats of primer. I used grey Rust-oleum high-temp primer. Let each coat dry. It was "spray, go do something else for a while, spray, go do something else....." Several light coats are better than a single heavy coat. 4. For the paint, I used flat black Rust-oleum high-temp spray paint. Again, several light coats are better than one heavy coat. Let each coat dry. 5. After the paint has set/dried, remove the plastic and painter's tape. 6. I heat cycled the exhaust-- let the car idle for about 20-30 minutes, let it cool down, repeat. I did at least two cycles, maybe three? It's been almost a year, and the paint job looks perfect. I think a lot of it will depend on driving conditions (i.e. drive in a lot of blizzards/mag chloride/etc., you may have to "retouch" on occasion. However, since mine's a "fair-weather" toy, it's held up very well. Easy peasy. R. |

All I've got on my computer at the moment-- I'm on the road all almost every day for the rest of the month, the car's in winter storage at my house, it's -9 there, and the couple days I'm home are booked solid with a blown up furnace and a home remodel.

BMS (replica) slash-cut 95mm black chrome exhaust tips.
I LOVE them-- they're the tips that should have come with the car from the get-go. I'll be selling them when I get my Dinan exhaust installed (IF it ever shows up)-- they're not compatible. R. |
