ASD - More than engine noise?

Trying to get a sanity check on this. I used a bypass harness to get rid of ASD and now I don't have fake engine noise being played through the speakers ... great.

It might just be my imagination, but road noise is a lot more pronounced and speaking to passengers in the cabin seems more challenging. The stereo also appears a bit more "flat" although I read about some of that in the ASD threads.

Does the ASD do more than just engine noise, such as noise cancellation based on make/model, acting perhaps as a EQ for the stereo based on a make/model harmonics etc?

Searched around and seems like i'm not the only one. While not having fake engine noise is nice, the car sounds less refined without the ASD module.

I have noticed the same thing. I found that the bass in the car is now less pronounced, cabin noise e.g. road noise is louder. So you you may be right, might have some other purpose like white noise...

In the OG M2 ASD was only fake engine noise.

I believe it does do some noise cancellation as well. There are other threads, however, that say the stereo is actually better without the ASD so maybe it's down to personal preference, idk. Mine is coded off

I think the stereo sounds better with the ASD bypass, but must admit that it may be all in my head...

I think the car is quieter overall with ASD disabled but maybe the ASD drowns out the loud tires. M2 and M2C have some sound deadening material removed to reduce weight.

I agree, but also disagree. The ASD was LOUD, and I didn't quite realize how loud it was until I bypassed it. The road noise is the same volume, the only difference is that you can ACTUALLY hear it now. While the car can be a bit noisy at high speeds or over rough roads, it's far better than my other cars, so I have no major complaints. I do plan on doing the supplemental door seals though, as I have heard they make a noticeable difference. For the speakers / sound system, with my untrained and non-audiophile self, I would say it has improved. Bass definitely seems more prominent, overall it's far less muddy sounding, and it just overall sounds more clear. I much prefer to have the radio almost off, and have the windows cracked, but maybe that's just me. I'm not entirely convinced the ASD is doing noise-cancelling due to how loud the actual engine noises were.

ASD was LOUD for me and I like having an aggressive sounding car. I coded my ASD off via bimmercode app. Glad I did as I can actually hear the turbos of the car now.

No issue with radio when ASD is off. Had ASD off for 9 or so months now.

Guys - What is the most popular / best OBD for the M2C, to go alne with Bimmercode? I've never coded before, and will likely do small stuff like code out ASD, etc.

Thanks

Pretty much this. This is why I left ASD alone - there were tons of thread stating how the car just sounded so much worse with it off, so I didn't bother messing with it.

ASD and systems like it are just the norm now in new cars. It honestly doesn't even bother me.

Coding with Bimmercode is easy as they already have default settings you can choose and it makes a backup before it starts. It has an 'expert mode', but as you can infer from the name it's for advanced users. I use the Veepeak OBDII adapter, works perfectly. Don't think you can really go wrong with which of the adapters you pick, although some are faster at connecting, reading/writing than others. Here's the approved iOS and Android list of adapters for Bimmercode.

I used Bimmercode to disable ASD, no issues with the radio or anything else. Road noise is more pronounced, because the fake ASD noise isn't there to drown it out.

Thanks, the reason I ask is that pricing is all over the place, from $30 to $100+. Was wondering if there really is a difference

Guess I'm in the minority who prefers the sound without ASD!

I had no idea the car even had such a thing, so when I was driving it home (several hundred miles) from the dealership I was like wow, this car has a hell of a lot of drone (to the point where I almost couldn't use the phone at 80 mph).

Then I get on here and everyone is slagging the ASD, which is normal for anything fake-bake on a $55K car (fake vents, scoops, etc).

But when I got Bimmercode I disabled it and immediately regretted it, so I enabled it again. However, I feel like it's because I don't ever drive on the highway, and have the stock exhaust, so during my tiny daily commute I actually prefer the extra sound.

Once I get a real exhaust things may change, but not driving on the highway is what really helps.

That's not ASD drone..

ASD and the AC/Fan goes into low to standby mode, when a phone call is in session.

Try making or receiving a call and pay attention to its operation..

I don't use the car to make my calls, I do it the old fashioned way...

Regardless, the cabin is very loud and listening to music on the radio is worthless (not that I want to). However, when a phone call comes in, its surprisingly ok to hear, and the person on the other side has never complained. So perhaps ASD does get toned down a bit? With coding, I guess one can always revert back to ASD...more of a personal preference for folks

I haven’t tried coding out the ASD, but I’m perfectly satisfied with the way it sounds now.
Even with ASD on, it’s not as loud as my old Camaro SS with dual-mode exhaust.
