European Delivery 9/10/19

With finally less than one month away I received my email confirming my check-in and delivery time on 9/10/19. Already booked my shuttle service from the airport. Planning on going to Andermatt the next day for the Gotthard Pass and Furka Pass and spend the rest of the week and weekend in Switzerland. Any tips on the trip from guys who have done the ED experience? Planning on visiting a couple of mountain tops in the Jungfrau region while also stopping in Lucerne, Zurich, Bern and flying out of Geneva!

buy a Swiss vignette in a gas station. its 40 euro and is valid for 2019.

don't trust google maps for traffic. Swiss traffic seems terrible. lot of control signals. I lost a whole afternoon and evening to it and missed out on gothard and furka and reached Lucerne around midnight from st Moritz.

keep euros. some gas stations don't take cards or reject US cards. its 95 and the nozzle is green.

look at speed limits before hand. I couldn't find speed limit info signs many times and my German friend in the passenger seat was the defacto speed limit info. keep to the right and don't zig zag (if you have not driven in Europe before)

and most important of all have fun !

Make sure to affix the Swiss vignette to the windshield (vs just keeping it in hand), as failure to do so can result in a hefty fine.
Get some Swiss francs (coins for public restrooms) since many places there don't accept Euros.
Hit Klausen pass if you're entering Switzerland from the east. Also hit Grimsel and Susten right after Furka.
Use the car's speed limit display and stick to it on Swiss roads as they can be quite stringent about speed limits there.
Use gas stations with an open convenience store so you can pay inside with your "swipe & sign" US credit card (vs the "swipe & pin #" credit cards that have taken over Europe).

For our EDs in the past I order my Swiss and Austrian toll tickets from tolltickets.com . They come by mail and you can specify the period of time you need it active for (e.g., dates of your trip).

Whatever you do, DO NOT SPEED in Switzerland, especially the larger cities. I got two tickets from Zurich a month after I got back. One for 51 in a 50 and the other for 53 in a 50. They were about $40 each.

Definitely hit the Susten Pass. It's an amazing drive.

How about going over the limit by the passes and in those country roads? Any issues? Or only on the main highways and in the cities?

I got stopped by Swiss police in one of those mountain passes. They wanted to know if I was smuggling meat and cigs. Zero appreciation for my car

Also don't forget that the speedometer is in MPH but when the Welt rep changes the units to KM that will reflect on the Cruise control speeds and range on gas tank.

Yes. An Austrian toll sticker. See my post above about ordering them on tolltickets.com

or you can get them at a gas station at the border though there is some nervousness if you can find one before the Austrian police catch you

Haha yeah agreed, I was giving him an option that's a bit more convenient/less anxiety inducing since his ED is a bit further out. It's funny you mentioned this, because although my wife and I ordered it online, we still tried to spot a station with it on our last ED to inform what we should do instead on future EDs and we actually missed the station haha. Needless to say I ordered it again this year for my ED next week.

I am having a hard time with Tolltickets as it does not give you a state for delivery. How easy are they to find when actually there?

You just put your city and state in the city field and USA in the country field

Super easy! As easy as finding a gas station close to the border or just after you’ve crossed. They will understand exactly what you are asking for when you tell them you need the window sticker. I wouldn’t bother ordering in advance.
I was just over there 2 weeks ago.

Nah, it seemed to only be in the city, and really only Zurich. I had no issues in Geneva, Lucerne, or Basel.

Bummed this happened to you. Our Nav Maps on our USB were perfect with no language issues. Wonder if you just had a run of bad luck. We usually do Waze and the BMW Nav as back up in case we drive through a dead zone

I crossed the border and had a panic attack that I was going to get pulled over. Found the nearest open gas station and they had one. Just call it a Vignette and they will know what you need. Toll sticker didn't seem to translate depending on their level of english. You also only need to buy the sticker in Austria for the amount of time you need. I think a week was about 15 euro. Switzerland, you need to buy the full year.

Note also you only need the sticker for the highways/expressways and not 'all roads'.

Good to know. We leave for ED tomorrow and our experience noted above was from 2017 when we picked up my wife's 80.

Same for me. I’m doing ED now and the USB maps doesn’t work very well. Google maps is much better, though far from perfect.
