Sorry to hear that absolutely sucks but happy you're in one piece! I was on the FDR over Thanksgiving weekend visiting family back at home and I forgot how much of a hell hole that highway is.

On a side note... too soon to ask about side mirrors and seats? (vultures swarming)

Still waiting on the insurance to tell me how much it will be to buy the car back. The adjuster will let me know as soon as he gets an estimate. If I decide not to buy it back it will be acuctioned as a salvage.

I am always in fear that I would have to make an emergency stop and jackass pacing behind me, with possible less capable brakes, would just slam into me.

I used to think I was just paranoid or mental until I did a social experiment and I drove a hoopty (crappy car). Immediately, I'd notice that the tailgating stopped and no one paid any mind to me..

I know the FDR drive and I already pictured how the accident happen with the OP. However, I will say that driving with summer tires didn't help with him regaining control, as they were probably hard as rocks, in the current 30 - 40 degrees climate.

Oh man I had an asshole in a POS tail gating me HARD the other night. I'm keeping a normal distance from the car in front of me but this dope decides to ride up my ass anyway. So I hit my secret rear fog light switch which has worked 100% of the time until now. Usually that makes them back off, but they just moved closer until I could see nothing but their windshield and glaring faces of them and their passenger. So it was war at that point. I just let off the gas bleeding speed until a semi caught up then kept pace with that so they could not pass me nor change lanes. If they hit me it's an excuse to upgrade to M2C.

You're preaching to choir, I deal with such situations on a daily basis, here in the Big (Congested) Apple.

Some shitheads here are immune to the rear fogs light now, I'm beginning to think they see it as a beacon and are just drawn closer to it.

I believe a lot of the aggressiveness from other motorist comes from sheer hate, not just M cars but all BMWs in general.. Envious drivers see it as 'he has a nice car and I don't, F him, I'll just piss him off, so he can be as bitter and miserable as I am. Ha Ha.'

As far as insurance totaling the car, I wouldn't want to deal with that unless I have to. It's a headache and when Jake from State Farm has to pay out a 70k claim, I'm pretty sure he's going to penalize you when your renewal policy comes up for review, regardless of fault.

If the motor wasn't touched and didn't starve for oil, I'm guessing the buyback will be high, like over 30k, as it still looks rebuildable.

Good luck and keep us updated

Wow, reading your post a thought came to mind. Why isn't he angrier, he should be absolutely livid.

Then saw your post that you have gap insurance (very smart) and appears you are not hurt, just shaken up. Bet this makes front page in the next few days.

Sad to see a brand new M2c in that condition. Felt sick looking at the pics.

At least it's winter, you have time to figure out your next move.

More than angry I was confused as hell after it happened. Then It started to sink in and now I just feel sad because I feel like I never had the car. Only drove it for 500 miles. Didn’t even get to feel what is like to shift hard or step on the gas all the way. The good thing about the Gap Insurance is that you get every penny you put in the car as a down payment. Geico told me the car loss zero equity. Not like other cars that lose value as soon as you leave the dealer.

It did not since the side wasn’t hit. The car is super smart. Also SOS was amazing. As soon as I hit that wall, they were talking to me through the speakers which made me even more confused. I had no idea who was talking to me. Within a couple of minutes, I was surrounded by FDNY, NYPD and EMS.

Sorry to hear about your loss and the predicament that the culprit cowardly fled the accident scene.

But what matters most in the end is the fact that you walked away from the accident with your personal health in pristine condition. Unlike health, totaled cars can be replaced at once.

Don't worry about bad memories eventually haunting you now and then - it's just an unfortunate situation anyone of us can encounter. Part of real world life. Maybe this comforting Steely Dan line provides some solace: "Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again". Get up and move on.

It's a shame, hopefully you get it replaced soon. But... Did it have the same tires?... Summer tires.. in December?

Sorry but this made me lol, you're high on adrenaline and confused AF while someone from BMW Connected is on your car speakers trying comfort you. Probably felt like a slow motion vertigo dream.

This sucks majorly!!

However, you are safe and sound - that's all that matters. A well engineered auto!

Sorry for you!!! I lost control and killed my M2 but it was a driving error... there it looks like a criminal act

The guy deserves jail ! There are maybe recordings from traffic control cameras the insurance can use... or a witness that could testify...
those days police is watching any corner

Again such a pitty for the car... hopefully you seem ok
Best luck from Switzerland
