M2 Competition fuel consumption vs M240i
About to trade in my M240i and noticed the HUGE fuel consumption difference between the 2 cars.
I get that the M2 is a lot more car but is it really that much worse ?!? I find the M240 absolutely fine, even if I drive it aggressively. No, I'm not buying that car to save fuel but still, no one likes to waste money on fuel. Can the M2 be "reasonably" good on gas like the M240 or is brutally bad regardless how it's being driven ? |

15-18 and I drive 90% city and 3rd gear canyon carving. On road trips, I can eek out 20-22 mpg but I have a 6MT. Welcome to having a real M engine.

Have never gotten over 17mpg ish. And I don't make every shift at redline either, just fun around town driving.
The fun factor will soon make you forget the mpg. As a matter of fact, you'll enjoy going to the gas station so you have an excuse to drive the M2, and even admire its ass while filling up. |

But the real metric that matters is smiles per miles, and the m2 comp does much better in this area than the m240i. it's just a completely different more engaging grin inducing experience with the comp so it's totally worth it |

I also went from a 240ix to M2C (Auto to 6MT)
M2C: for long drives I can get it down to 8.3-8.6L/100km pretty consistently even if traveling fast. I get better mileage in Sport Mode but it could just be the way I feather the throttle. Once I hit a curvy road, I waste every drop of fuel that I had saved... M240ix: could get it down to 6-6.5L/100km pretty consistently and without much thought. However, most of the time I'm at 10.5-11.5L in the M2C vs. being at 9L in the M240ix. |

In comfort mode cruising, I can get 28 highway! But any fun driving or stop and go takes it down quickly to 24-25, which has been my average on mountain drives. Pure city traffic is about 18-20.
Track driving is 6-8 mpg, I've gone thru a tank in 3 sessions. I have the DCT which may help cruising MPG.

My last three tanks of gas hovered right at 14.6 mpg for my daily commute.
If you're not getting the same or worse your not having as much fun as me |

i went from a 230i to the M2C so the drop in MPG was a kick in the gut initially. However i find that if i modify my driving habits in a way i can get close to 21 MPG in Sport+ while still having a ton of fun. Its to the point where i actually have more fun and get better MPG in Sport+ than i do in Comfort mode which makes zero sense to me.
I do attribute it to just the way i drive and for whatever reason it doesnt enjoy that method of driving in Comfort mode, and so my MPG goes down. Either way after about a month i stopped caring about my MPG. The car is too damn fun. |

40 miles a day,a bit of spirited driving mainly cruising but on small roads. Average 25mpg which is a UK gallon (4.55litres). My f85 does 20mpg and the misses f83 averages 27mpg but she drives quite steady most of the time but isn't afraid to give it some.
All in all I'm surprised how much the m2 drinks but as others have said you forget about it. Every time you walk up to it you smile at those hips, then you get in and the ride never fails to impress..... perfect really! 😉 Main gripe is the tank size which is dismal |

Each session at VIR is about 15-20 full throttle runs up to 130-140 mph. So yes, not unexpected.

OP, are we talking M2 or M2C? Around town, the M2C gets 18 or 19 mpg, hwy get's much better. I've gotten all the way up to 29 mpg. This is for the 6 speed not the auto which has an extra gear that would push that figure even higher.

I averaged 25mpg over a multi day road trip which surprised me. I was expecting high teens. I think it feels worse than it is because the tank is so small.
I don't think fuel efficiency is an important concern for people in the market for an M car. |

My M235i ZF8 would get incredible fuel economy on a long trip in comfort mode (32 mpg). The ZF8 is high geared in 8th. That said, if you are driving the twisties hard you can watch the gas gauge go down. I think a 6spd M235 or M240 would burn more gas overall and especially on the highway since the 6spd is low geared.
My M2C 6spd gets 19 mpg combined over several thousand miles which is not that much worse than my M235 which was about 21 mpg. Like any performance car if you drive it hard it will drink gas. |

That's the problem, sort of. The tank was designed for the fuel economy of the base 2 series.

Yup, and the base engine in America is a mid-level engine in Europe. The M2c is at the extreme end of “the car was never designed to get an engine this big.” It works brilliantly with an S55 but there are some compromises.

Reading these forums I was almost scared about fuel economy, but after almost three months, it’s really not that bad considering the absurd amount of power you have under your foot. So much fun. I would say it’s 1.5-2 L/100 Km worse then my 330i F31.
