"Notchy" or "Baulky" are common choices.

It basically feels like the clutch isn't disengaging properly.

Edit: Oh, and "recalcitrant"

I would think it does, because bmw specifies MTF lt5 (as the only suitable replacement, unlike oil where you have a choice if it's LL01 approved. Dctf is also suitable for MTF lt5 applications as per redline but it's not bmw approved. I actually haven't been able to find a bmw approved MTF through ista either so I don't think bmw wants you using anything except MTF lt5, even the pentosin equivalent isn't approved and bmw MTF is a rebranded pentosin fluid.
MTF-LT-5 is backordered at FCP Euro and also out of stock at my BMW dealer's nearest two stores (was told 3 weeks to order from Germany). I ended up ordering some Pentosin FFL-3 from FCP Euro where it shows as a "ZF-approved alternative fluid" for MTF-LT-5.

Has anyone seen anything formal from BMW finally approving FFL-3 as suitable for the manual transmission in the M2C?

I think Pentosin FFL 3 is acceptable, I have heard people use that before. Although I would have upgraded to another fluid like redline dctf.

I may use Redline next time around but, for now, still under warranty and trying to stay as close as possible to "OE" fluids.

Fwiw… I asked FCP Euro if they had any documentation of BMWs approval and this was their response:

"I'm happy to help! I took a look into this for you and I was not able to find any information or documentation regarding the fluid being approved by BMW."

My $0.02: If you track your car, I would change regularly - say every year - cheap insurance. Otherwise several years, certainly not 'never'.

I have mostly changed my mind on RedLine products other than their engine oil - no data to back this up...

I'm just going by what's recommended by F87source. . If it's good enough for his car, it's good enough for mine.

My experience with transmissions is that the factory fill is often the best. Found this to be true in Porsche and Subaru!

It is funny how oils become almost a religious topic!

I usually trust the opinions at BITOG... Smart people, in general.

My car is 4 years old and has 24k miles on it. I took it in for the last warranty check and had them change the transmission oil. It shifts smoother now. I don't think it's placebo.

I don't either, I think it's legit that clean fluid makes a difference. My M2 noticeably engaged 1-2 shifts much smoother after new fluid.

Did you do your rear differential fluid as well?

I changed my Mazda 3 to Redline and I’m not sure if I felt a difference or not. Honestly, it’s a really smooth shifter anyway and it’s only improved with time. I am eager to try this on my M2C once I get more miles.

Not yet, I plan on changing it around 30k since it was changed at the break-in service already. It will probably be another year at my current mileage rate. Then i think I'll change them every 30k or so depending on the time-line. I think lifetime fill of any oil is crazy.

I just changed the Tranny fluid to Redline with 17K miles on the odometer and I didn't think it would make a difference, but it feels so much better. I did also upgrade the transmission bushing to rouge as well so that could be part of it. Shifting into 1 and 2 feels a lot smoother.

I'm likely going to do transmission fluid next year or the year after, so I can't wait to finally get some redline dctf in the car.
