Wow.....BMW is just going in the wrong direction. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I liked the Bangle designs so much more than this.

Yup. F8x series looks chiseled and strong. G8x looks like Jaba the Huts pet monster that lurks in the basement with a bone stuck in its teeth.

Not really a fair comparison, but it's very hard to see how they will make the car on the right look anywhere near as good as the car on the left (one of the best looking BMWs of all time).

It's styling has clear through lines to cars and designs of the past while still looking more modern and having its own identity. Even if you take out my fondness for the cars of my childhood and teenage years; I don't think the G42 looks well proportioned. The headlights look too swept back and high. The headlights of the F87 just look more aggressive and predatory. Additionally, what is up with those side intakes on the lower bumper? I just can't see how anyone thought that looked good. The rear end is total mess, worst since the Bangle Butt. All that said, I was not a fan of the E6X & E9X cars initially but I now find them a lot more attractive. Maybe that will be the case with some of these G chassis cars?

You can see in the picture below what I mean about the F87 tying well with some of the older cars.
I'm not sure if it's because I'm seeing this photo on my phone, but the M2 looks enormous next to the E46 M3! Is it the angle?

And yes, i think you nailed it - the F87 fits within the lineage really well

They exist! I owned one for 7 years. Le Mans blue, but with a black interior. It was so beautiful. I miss her.

I love the old M2 model. The CS is sweet but pricey for what you get. However, bmw has a lot to figure out. I bought a new M240i and I wish I could have gotten a M2 comp back in June but it just wasn't available. The flip side is the new interior of these G series models is amazing. What made an M2 great was the simplicity of it with not a lot of extra stuff that wasn't needed. It was a great drivers car overall.

From these two, i will pick the only one that has a defined design language and is beautiful.
Not the Subaru.

Looks ugly. No comparison with the F87.

I never liked the F87/F22 always reminded me of a Japanese coupe—but not sure if I like this new 2-series either it also looks Japanese. I miss the more squared off german look of classic BMWs—-so I guess I don't like either.

The G42 M240i looks just fine in the right hue.. My pick would be purple or black..

Just like the G8x, the black side skirts (why?!?!) make the car look clunky and higher off the ground.
In fact, in black looks much better.

I don't know if it is possible to fix such a strange design only with the right (and dark) paint. Especially the back...those terrible taillights kill everything anyway.

Minigonne nere dici. Sì...certo fa danni anche il cofano molto più alto. E poi vabbè, c'è il posteriore che è una roba da inchiesta, nutrivo speranze in questa macchina ma non posso girarmi dopo aver parcheggiato e vedere un cuxo del genere.

It's not terrible looking it's just that it doesn't have a bmw feel. It looks more like a Kia.

CS is a future classic hands down. Such a nice coherent design with great performance.

I'm a HUGE BMW fan, and the M2 was a good fit for a little drift car. When I saw the new 2 series, I was disappointed because this is not BMW at all, it feels like someone from a JDM company designed it. Like someone else said, I can't put my finger on it but I surely hope that this generation doesn't last long.
