While I still prefer the looks of the F22/F87 because it truly has a feel of an E generation car, I don't think these pictures of the 2 cars side by side like that does the G42 justice.

My 2 cents.
With inflation going the way it is, soon you'll need to put in 3¢ 😂

God that's ugly, I'll be surprised if BMW manages to make the new M2 look good.

Seen one in the lot and I've passed one on the freeway, and it's just ugly. I can't stand the look. But performance and tech will drive sales, so I'm not surprised by the uptick with this and the G8x line of M's selling like gangbusters at this point. I just can't see either in my garage.

M2 looks soooo much better… but the m240 makes the m2 look old.

I suspect the F87 will sooner rather than later be considered classic in a good way (not old in a bad way). If that happens it's place in history will be secure. In some ways more radical new designs will secure that transition.

As an example, I think the 507 is one of BMW's most beautiful cars. It's also old.

Saw a G42 recently on the commute, looked like all the MP options ticked. I’m sure technically it’s light years ahead (even current 1 series makes F feel old tech), but the visual exterior is tough to take in. Too many conflicting lines/angles and the proportions look out of whack- specifically the long bonnet, and small front and rear light units.
I know the M2 will be better than a standard 2 series, but….

I'm sure it will have brilliant and improved engineering - it's the design I'm crossing my fingers on.

Went to an inner city dealer today just to have a casual look around. (not looking to buy)
They had a G42 there in black, first time I've seen one in the metal.
First impressions are that it doesn't look terrible, but doesn't look great either.
Side profile has a bit of F32 to it, especially the rear quarter and window. Front just looks kind of, ummm, sad.
Not the popular view, but I still think F22 M240i looks better.
They also had a portimao blue G80 M3C there, which did look pretty good, grille and all, so it's not like I'm against all the new stuff.
Parked beside the G42 was an iX, now that one did trigger feelings of shock and revulsion that I haven't had for a car for many years.
