You’ll have to replace the malfunctioning taillight unit.

I’ve seen references here and there to an extended warranty for the issue:

And there are many other threads on this topic that are an easy search away:

The definitive fix is to replace it. It is not serviceable.
It looks like the issue inside was fixed with newer production ones.

Is there a source for that, or just based on not seeing the newest ones fail?

I have the same problem (sometimes it happens casually).
The car is still under warranty but the dealer told me that the lights are not covered (and it is false because the warranty covers in full the all the led lights like the rear turn light, not the halogens).
So I have to call another dealer (200km away...) to try to find someone more qualified...

Are there bulbs or led for rear turn signs in that newer version of lamp? Not possible only to exchange it for led and upgrade it by diagnostic tool ?

They can be fixed, but they are not so expensive that you need to waste time sending them to Spain to repair.

I changed mine due to getting hit in the rear and I think they cost 200e each.

They are all led, even the turn lights. You have to change the entire light

They should definitely be covered by warranty. They also leave behind codes so the dealer can tell if they have been malfunctioning in the past. I brought mine into the dealer for the right turn signal, and they saw that the left also had issues in the past and ended up replacing both for free under warranty.

For a while, at least. Not forever.

both dealers I've asked about were ignorant of this issue, and neither could find any TSA or warranty statements from BMWUSA.

after trying the coding recommendation, what has (mostly) resolved the issue for me is pulling the lights and slightly bending the pins inside the connectors. I'm of the belief this is a bad molex design issue. Very easy to do, and got immediate results. Only several months later has it begun happening sporadically again.

If it is the same issue that plagued the F22's then it relates to inadequate grounding capacity; thus anything to improve connections will help (they had a workaround to add an extra ground wire, fixed it with a new design). If you look back or search for related posts, I'm pretty sure others have posted their service bulletin info (not just 'replaced as a goodwill), and if they keep balking you could try calling the BMW CCA ombudsman.

You can code out the light check and thus the warning, which then means you drive around with a defective turn signal and not have any dash warning.

Not really a great fix...

I tried it all over a 2 year period and the fault always came back. So I bought updated darkline tail lights, new BMW ones, and no problem since. About 16months now.

Can you provide a link to the taillights you purchased?
I've had this issue for years, think its time to finally swap them out.

See realoem https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...07#63217420991 snip below, from 03/2019 the tail lights went blackline with smoked finish and I've not heard of them failing as such. The part numbers you need are on the right in blue.

It comes complete with all items in the picture including trim piece no.6 which I though would be separate.

The old version has a EBA code alongside which is an "installation guide" number, which is also for installation of repair kits or other fixes. That EBA number comes up with a connector repair kit, which may have been the "offiicial" repair to try before warranty replacment.

Any they look better IMO, very subtle shading.

I bought mine from Ebay, brand new sealed in the box, about 30% less than from BMW in UK.

Just search the part numbers.

Great post.

Both of my were replaced by the dealer and I haven't had an issue for 15K miles, so I'm sure I could sell mine, but but $500 + shipping for the blacklines is a bit rich I think.

If you had them for free then sure see how they go.

My car was in warranty initially, but they said they would first have to update the car before any warranty fixes, which would block obd tuning on mine and remove the tune, so i chose to self fix.

Worked for a while, but by the time it got so bad the car was well out of warranty anyway.
