Anyone figured out if you can code the backlight for the dash to stay on permanently, or even better to white during the day?

Headlights or Parking Lights On

Is the instrument panel sufficiently lit when the light switch is turned to the right one or two positions?

Could be a work around?

On a bright day none of the headlight switch options will turn on the instrument panel lights. So it seems the instrument panel lighting is completely controlled by car's light sensor. So the workaround would probably be to code so as to disempower the light sensor and either have instrument lights on all the time (my preference) or only for certain headlight settings.

Or put a sticker on the light sensor

My E90 335 was coded to have the cluster lit all the time; I told Okee (codemycar.com) that this would be a very popular option for M2 owners...hopefully someone will crack it.

I found it in realoem but it doesn't show the location of the sensor:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=61_2807

If anyone has a repair manual it says refer to 51 31 011 for sensor removal.

There's an ambient light sensor on the back of the rear view mirror but I suspect it only affects the auto dimming function. The sensor you cited seems related to rain, speed limit, and lane departure detection. AFAIK this is at the top of the windshield behind the rear view mirror cover. Not something I suspect you'd want to mess with.

It is classified based on options so BMW can use a different sensor with more/less functionality depending on what options the car has. If you scroll all the way to the bottom, the only option that is selected is speed limit info and the sensor is still described as "Sensor for rain / light"
