Choppy brakes after track day

Hi all.

I’m not sure how to describe it, but the brakes feel “choppy” after one track day. I did 5 20 minute sessions . The brakes/pads did great. No fade and great stopping power from repeat 120->30mph. I used stock pads since I don’t think I’ll be doing track much, if at all. I’m usually doing AX and don’t need special braking power for that. The pad thickness looks ok from outside, I haven’t taken the tires off. The pads have 30k miles. Any suggestions of what this may be or what to look at before I take it in to a pro?

Thanks!

You may have some brake deposits on the rotors. It should wear off. If not the rotors are warped but doubt that's the issue.

Agree with omasou, likely uneven deposits from overheating stock pads on track. Give it 2 weeks and next time go for a high temp pad.

Sounds like pad deposits. Take more time to cool the brakes down after each session if you weren't already, and never hold the brakes while stationary after a session.

Same thing happened to me. I waited for two weeks of daily driving and issue did not go away. I switched to ferodo ds1.1 and the harder compound scraped all the old deposits away and after bedding the pads the shudder was gone. Only issue is the ds1.1 is quite noisy a (sounds like a garbage truck). So I then switched to ferodo ds2500 for daily and I’m happy as no noise now.

Agreed with the above...you overheated the stock pads, which melted and stuck to the disc face creating high spots. This may help:

Get a rotor hone and put it on a cordless drill then blast the rotor faces and rebed pads

Brake Judder

I had the same issue after running the Ferodo DS 2500 hard on the track so I finally put on a pair of the Ferodo DS 1.11 race pads on and voila after 2 weeks of driving them down the hill cold on my morning drive to the office and they sanded off the material that melted onto the disc faces....phew!!!
So now running the DS 2500 on the street and swapping to the DS 1.11 for track days.

It is definitely pad deposits. The stock pad material does not do well in track use. I swap in Pagid RS29 pads for track duty. It will take some time but your rotors will return to normal. Keep in mind the rotors are not warped so don't go chasing that as a solution.
