Removing the foam under the engine cover for noise?

Any idea what this does? Is it a heat shield for the fire wall?

Or as some have said for noise reasons?

I have ASD disabled via harness and any extra engine noise i would take

It's for sound deadening, without it direct injector ticking is louder and imo that's not really a good sound, it's an annoying sound.

I don't personally like the engine cover (it's not terrible, but I prefer without), but I've heard the ticking is pretty terrible, so I left mine.

I use it to minimize the amount of dust that gets onto the coil packs, and spark plug area. The less that goes around there the less that can potentially go down the spark plug well when the coil pack is removed and the less that can get into the cylinder.

Remove my cover for a few weeks a year when the summer heat peaks. The noise isn’t loud.

Think I'll leave it then. The car doesn't come with under bonnet insulation at least! Removed it on my previous car and made a nice difference to engine sound in the cabin but only when on it.

I removed the foam. You do get slightly more engine noise but it's not a dramatic change.

I removed the foam, and the engine sounds a bit more raw when under load - I like it!

Dust cover outweighs any other benefit

I definitely love having ASD disabled

3t3p I randomly found another thing that has noticeably increased the engine/turbo noises in the car recently; I fitted the F82 aluminium brace and haven't yet got around to ordering some new top mount rubbers to match. The increase in turbo spooling noise is extremely noticeable within the cabin.

Other factors contributing to this:
1) I am running with a Pipercross drop-in filter (which is really good drop-in option and does increase induction noise slightly)
2) I have a d088 intercooler which does increase the turbo spooling noise slightly.

Overall, it sounds really good, so I will probably keep it this way TBH.

You're saying no rubbers is making it louder?

I did run without them for a while before getting the right part but never noticed a sound difference.

I think with the combo of my setup, yes it made a difference. So much so that the other day my wife mentioned to me that the car made a noise every time she put her foot down (LOL - doesn't it always! ) - slightly alarmed, I took the car for a drive and it was just the louder turbo spooling. I think that the do88 intercooler (which is quite large; similar to CSF) is responsible for most of that sound increase - it could be heard before, but it's definitely louder without the rubbers.
