By quantifiable measures, you are 100% correct.

By non-quantifiable measures, and depending upon how one weighs the non-quantifiable measures, you may or may not be correct - it is entirely subjective.

The OP asked about what was most surprising about the M2C. For me, what was most surprising was how much better my 135is nailed non-quantifiable elements of the driving experience than my M2C.

I may come around, there are a lot of things I love about the M2C, but my hunch is that once the manufacturer adds "active sound" the manufacture has lost the plot.

Lol

You can drive your 1 series.

You gotta be kidding me, M2C is possibly the last modern BMW with a classic touch.

Just drive and enjoy the car!!

Stop complaining or soon you'll be flooring your EV with "no sound" at all.

FWIW, just about all of the PCD instructors mentioned they like the M2C in comfort setting for steering because it felt less artificial. sport+ for throttle, naturally.

so far, i find myself liking sport mode for steering, but that could change as i get through break-in period and start pushing the car more.

I concur. My wife's parents own a 335is convertable and the M2C comes out on top for sure. We'd borrow the 335is on the weekends. It has a fun auto transmission and sounds great, but I completely prefer the M2C for a multitude of reasons.

Sometimes I do notice that the sport and sport+ offer a little more road feel on certain roads but maybe that's just in my head.

Overall feel is more natural and consistent with comfort.

Also to a certain extent the tires play a role, so maybe swapping with Cup2 or 4S tires may help improve the steering feel.

The gearing in this car is perfectly sporty. On my Caymans, 2nd gear was way too long. The ratios in this 6MT are so enjoyable. 6th gear could be a tad taller, but that’s just a minor complaint.

It does after about 3 seconds. Be careful!

I love driving this car. I'm surprised at the balance between comfort and performance it achieves. I like it enough that I consider leaving it stock, but probably won't. The engine, steering, and clutch gearshift are really smooth.

And out of the cars I've owned, so far the M2C is my favorite.

Most surprising thing for me was how much better the chassis felt than my e92 m3 and how sharp the front end is in general.

I was also surprised (disappointed) in the lack of steering feedback.

New impression- now two months in.

Build quality. I'm impressed by how solid this thing is. Everything feels tight. Can't find any manufacturing defects.

It feels like the manufacturing facility and the inspection process were very well dialed in.

Edit to add: I have a 2021 vehicle from a domestic US manufacturer around the same price point as the M2C. It has multiple paint defects, a coolant hose routed incorrectly, an unsecured wiring loom, interior finish defects, and a rogue sensor. And I've had other BMWs with some random issues / interior rattles. But the M2 at the end of the production cycle seems like exhibit A for manufacturing perfection.

Love this thread! I'm 8 months and ~10k miles into ownership and I agree with the majority of what's already been said. I actually bought my M2C in VA and drove it cross country during a move to LA, so my feelings about the car might be skewed by that trip but:

Negatives:
  • Touchy brakes...sometimes difficult to modulate and travel/bite changes depending on whether brakes are warm/cold
  • Lack of steering feel...obviously b/c of EPS but I'm hoping different tires and alignment (camber + caster) will help
  • Notchy and vague manual trans...I have an autosolutions ss, but still think the MT leaves a lot to be desired.
  • Rough ride...bouncy and feels unsettled on rough pavement.

Positives:
  • S55 (power, torque, and flexibility)...I don't mind the sound either! I think it's a crime to drive a turbo car and not be able to hear the turbos, so I might do catted DPs.
  • Design and proportions...this car will age well and is the last of a dying breed. I think it look like a poor man's Aston Vantage
  • Hockenheim silver color...beautiful color, changes depending on lighting and relatively easy to keep clean.
  • Dual personality...drive it in econ under 3k and it doesn't seem like a performance car. Sport / sport plus, MDM or all assist off and you have a drift machine that will bite your head off if you're not careful!
  • Also the M Diff...got me out of this mess:
