MT Reverse
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com So something weird happened to me yesterday... While at a traffic light, I went to put the car in 1st, and whoooppps that was reverse!!! Nearly shit myself, and the guy behind me wasn't too impressed... Then I DID IT AGAIN wtf?!? and a THIRD time! This is the second time this has happened to me. Its like the point of resistance that normally prevents you from going into reverse, was non existent. I actually tried to mimic the condition today, and had to make a very conscious effort in order to get it into reverse. I don't know what the deal was Has anyone had a experience like this with the M2C? And before I get blasted, I am a experienced MT driver. And I have 4500miles on the current M2C |

Yeah, you really have to muscle it hard into reverse. So either you have a super strong forearm, bicep, chest combo, are Superman, or may have major wear in your reverse gate (but that would be rare if not unheard of).

Hasn’t happened to me on the M2 Como...but it has happen to me on my Aircooled 993 a couple of times. The resistance to Reverse is sometime less...depending on where you’re Syncros are and here you are stopped. It can def be scary and freaks you out for sure.....

I have to slap it like a red headed step child to get mine into reverse... how the hell do you just oopsie daisies it there 3 times... just put it in 2nd if you cant find 1st. Honestly sounds like user error to me.

I've made a habit of waiting a second to see if the PDC and backup cam turn on when I'm pulling out of a parking spot to be sure of what gear I'm actually in. That being said it really shouldn't be too difficult to train yourself to spot the difference in feel between 1st and R. If you don't feel any resistance at times maybe take it to the dealership and have the gearbox examined and fixed/replaced if need be. There should definitely be a difference in feel between the two gears.

It's happened to me in my 335 a couple of times. I wasn't sure how I got into reverse either, like I somehow bypassed the gate. Made no sense, and fortunately didn't hit anything.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Quit bragging Mr Strongman. I know I'm not in as great shape as I use to be, but no need to throw it in my face.
But seriously, my car needs a very high level of effort to move to reverse. |

never happened to me (20 M2C) - takes quite an effort to get to R. I just switched the shifter to the M performance carbon fiber as well and have not encountered this issue.

I have also done it at a stop light. I will give my excuse. It has happened when I was trying to quickly go from neutral to 1st and when doing it quickly I overcame the resistance stop pretty easily. I hate reverse in this location. My manual corvette has it to the far right which seems like much a safer location.

The effort to get into reverse and 5th/6th (and therefor what centers the lever) is controlled by detents in the transmission. It is common as as transmission ages for these to wear out (sometimes called the 5th gear lean) where it doesn't center anymore.
These are very simple passive devices and they aren't that hard to replace... once you get the transmission out of the car. Since they are simple and your car is still new it is unlikely these have worn out or broke. However, if you are pulling it all the way to the left (but not going into gear) and it doesn't want to forcefully go back to center, you have a problem with the detents. |

I can't get into reverse unless I slammed it in with force. It's much much more resistance than previous manuals I had.
I would take it to the dealer to let them check out to see if a spring or something inside is loose. |

Haven't had this happen to me either. It's pretty difficult to get into R for me. Takes my wife both hands to do it! OP should probably get it checked out.

Happened to me once in my 335. Not over and over but I guess when a green light catches you off guard you tend to muscle it over inadvertently. If it happens again just drop it into second and take off rather than nearly hit someone 3 times lol

yep, in my previous 335.. that car had terrible synchro issues. The reverse thing was rare but did happen, more often it wouldn't go into first gear gate at all from a red light.

Hasn’t happened to me.
I agree with others though, I hate this location for reverse. You had to physically push towards the ground in my Nissan to get to R and Subarus have that little ring around the shifter that you have to pull up. I much prefer a system like that. |
