Manual or Dual Clutch

So, I've placed my order for a 2017 M2 (Long Beach Blue with Sunroof).

I can't decide to get the Manual or the Double Clutch.

I know half the people say Manual and half say Double Clutch.
I use to drive a z4 35i Automatic with Paddles.

Can i get someones opinion that have driven both and tell me what what the difference between Manual, Double Clutch and Paddles?
Is it worth the extra $3,900??

Also, is Apple CarPlay worth it?
I have an iPhone 6s.

One other questions.
I notice the Freight and PDI on this car is $4,995.
All other BMW i have purchased in the pass was $1,995.
Why so high?

Thanks.

I would have paid $3900 CAD for the manual option in this particular car. The M2 was born and bred for the MT.

Do you mean NOT pay the $3,900 for the Double clutch?

I went with manual, but get what you like. I just love manual cars.
DCT is really faster/better technology IMHO.

I have Smart Phone connectivity but I am not sure if it's worth it (anyways, what's 750 CAD$ on a 70k CAD$ car anyways).

Search is your best bud for this topic, basically been one of main decisions on this forum. Best way for you to decide is go find an M3/M4 at the dealer and test drive both (what i did).

Here are some posts which should help your decision:

If you're on the fence about a decision, always save the money. So yeah get the manual. All the reviewers say it's better and typically manuals have had higher (US at least) resale too on M cars. Get the DCT only if you care about laptimes or you or SO can't drive manual or if you're really wanting to keep boost through a shift.

Honestly, try to drive an MT and a DCT M3/4 to get a feel for how the transmissions behave.

For me, 6MT all the way. I like the additional control it gives me over the car and the (typically) higher resale value doesn't hurt.

If you don't care about squeezing the last bit of performance and enjoy driving stick. Then Manual. I'm a sore loser, so I went DCT.

If you are undecided about whether you want to go MT or DCT, that means there is at least a part of you deep down who is an old-school car guy who enjoys shifting for yourself. Let that part of you have his way, and buy the MT.

Also, to some extent, cars with manual transmissions are less popular amongst car thieves in the US.

I'm sure its close to 50/50 in general but on this forum I bet its more 70/30 in favor of the manual. I myself being a fellow Canadian went with the manual. I drove the DCT in the M4 and personally I would say its definitely not worth $3900. In my opinion if there was zero upcharge for the DCT I would have still went with the 6MT. I would reason it this way - The way cars are going more and more only have DCT as options, get the manual while you still can.

As to car play if your an iphone guy like myself then its definitely worth the $750 - being able to listen and respond to texts while driving and choose music etc. etc. all via voice command is pretty useful.

I'm getting car play because it's cheap and I'm an apple guy I guess. Transmission is more personal opinion. The number of cars offered with manual trans decreases every year, and I personally enjoy the driving experience more with a manual transmission. If you want to chase the fastest track time or 0-60 time than DCT is your best bet.

Last car was a 6spd turbo. I got a dct for the m2. Monday - Friday, love daily driving. Shifts are fast, and sitting in traffic is breeze. Sat-sun regret creeps hard. My personal opinion, if you have an easy commute or this will be a second car, do yourself a huge favor and get manual. If it's a DD in heavy traffic, dct is awesome but still manual

Copy & Paste of my own opinion about the Manual vs DCT... This was a really hard decision for me to make...

Quote:
The M2 will be my daily car replacing my 12 year old e46 325i M-tech wagon (with manual gearbox). I also have a modified 2006 Z4M roadster sitting in my garage for sun, fun and track…. The Z4M is a keeper! The M2 will mainly be my daily and will also come on track (Nurburgring) 8 times a year (instead of my Z4M).

When I ordered my M2 I had the same problem and the DCT vs manual drove me crazy! I first ordered a manual Black M2, then changed to a DCT Black M2 and then changed again to a manual Mineral Grey M2
This manual mineral grey was also the spec when I made my very first online building spec for a M2 to see what my estimated price would be, before visiting a dealer and doing a test drive.

I had a test M2 DCT for 3 hours, a M2 manual for 1 hour and a M4 DCT for 1 hour. The first testdrive was with the M2 DCT. When I picked up the M2 it already won me over after 15min of testing and I was tempted to buy a M2 DCT. Then I needed to decide the color and gearbox...so I also did a test with a manual M2 and again with a M4 DCT (back to back).

In the past I borrowed an e90 M3 DCT from a friend for one week and lived with it on a daily basis. I did not like the gearbox in city and slow stop and go traffic (I hated it when parking in tight spots). On normal roads the DCT made me want to drive the car realy fast to enjoy the fast shifts. For me the DCT gearbox is at his best when driving realy fast or on a track...then it is an extra value and awesome piece (personal opinion). After two days in city traffic I stopped using the manual gearshifts of the DKG and just put it in D... It made me feel like a leazy driver in the e90 M3.

I have read almost every review about the M2 and how good and involving the manual gearbox is suppose to be. So I also did a test drive with a manual M2. The manual gearbox of the M2 is not perfect! The clutch pedal felt really soft...for me it could be a little heavier with more feeling...but it is not that big of an issue. The movement of the cluth pedal is really long (a lot longer then on my Z4M and e46 325i). I was amazed at how long the travel of the clutch pedal is and that I never saw it mentioned in any review? When releasing the clutch your knee gets really high...the end of the movement of the cluth is rather high (if you know what I mean)

With the manual gearbox you can feel the effect of turbo lag a little more then with the DCT. THe DCT shifts faster so there is less drop in rev's. The DCT has 7 instead of 6 gears, so the gearing is also shorter and it feels that you keep the engine more in the powerband with feeling less turbo lag.

When I made my pro & con's list…the DCT had more con's for me then the manual. IMO the M2 is a car that is more about involvement and a little back to basic driving pleasure (in a modern package). I felt the manual gearbox suited the M2 personality better. With the bigger f80 M3/M4 I would probably also choose DCT. It's a great gearbox and I understand why people would like to have it.... In the end I choose the gearbox with the heart and I ordered a manual M2.

I have read almost every review of the M2
Most reviewers say both gearboxes are equally good and it's down to personal preference of the buyer. If they do have a personal preference then in most cases it's the manual gearbox. This is coming from people who drive a lot of different cars and who love driving.

If OP is worried about traffic, its not an issue in manual now with the auto rev in first gear, well at least for me LOL. Just let out the clutch, no gas and car creeps for you

True I forgot about that. It's funny they don't advertise that feature. OP get a manual. If someone was willing to trade with me I'd do it

See this dedicated thread: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1177987 (" M2 transmission: do you prefer manual or double-clutch ?")

Stats after 390 votes:
  • 238 out of 390 = 61.03%: manual transmission;
  • 152 out of 390 = 38.97%: M-DCT Drivelogic.
The breakdown always kept on hovering around 3/5 manual and 2/5 M-DCT.

Get M-DCT if you plan to daily drive it and there's traffic in your city. No regrets so far and the transmissions is really slick, can't go wrong with it.

Edit: I haven't tried the manual with the auto-rev function, if you can try it and it works for you, get manual then. But still, M-DCT is awesome nonetheless (PDK level).
