My car isn't in the diff recall batch but heard the crunch noise twice in 1200 miles, the dealer checked and said it was the parking brake that needed adjustment.

I know we mostly don't care about this because the car is so awesome but I went in for break-in service today at BMW Austin and mentioned it to the SA. He said they knew about it and there's a replacement shield but its on order from Germany. Told me about a month or so out. Gonna ring me up when its in. Other ATX M2 folks might wanna call and make sure they're getting multiple.
Also there's no way the post break-in feel is all placebo. The car pulled way harder even just on my way home. I wish I had ECU instrumented before and after to prove it. Butt Dyno is all I have.

I hear the noise all the time, and I'm just at 1700 miles. Sometimes its not as noticeable, while other times everyone in the parking lot hits the deck or runs to the nearest bunker!

Bump this- Any solution to this problem yet? I have 1/4 mile of small gravel to drive to my house, and I heard the noise 6 times in succession today while driving slow in my office parking lot. LOUD and embarrasing Is it possible to pry the shield away from the disc at the bottom? Anyone find a fix yet???

the mesh guards were only mentioned in a few posts in November, which I missed. I'm surprised that this thread has gone on so long as the fix is so simple. Will check with dealer today. Thanks

Talked to my dealer about it. No such thing for them to order. Sound like something goofy the dealer did or made themselves.

There are none. The dealer that did it used epoxy to hold the mesh on if remember the thread. Probably went to the hardware store, got some mesh and did a great hack job attaching it.

Today I just heard the "soda can crunch noise" today for 3 times within 5 minutes. Mine is MY2017, and I've been using it for 4,500 km. But I always drive on a good road Today, the noise appear when I run over some small stones which is left on the road. After that I heard the sound 3 times straight during slow speed. After I drove it for another 5km, the sound disappeared. My guess is same as you guys now which is the stone that making the noise.
BUT! after I got home, I check my wheels and these scratches appear in my both rear wheels. Both on the front don't have any scratches (I still don't know why.) So it really make sense that those rocks I ran over cause the noise, and maybe the cause of these scratch. But i'm wondering how could the rocks goes inside so easily, why other Models like F30 don't have this kind of problem? |

Those marks are normal and not from stones.

Bummer. Well, the car goes in on Monday. I've already alerted the Service Adviser we we will see what they have to say. Maybe I'll get one of those really creative BS explanations that others on the forum have gotten. "uh, oh, yeah, we found the issue. A pack of squirrels was nesting in your muffler. The sound you heard was them fighting over an acorn. Don't worry, we fixed it."

I have an August production M2, delivered in September last year. I've had these noises sporadically since about 500 miles. Today though was a new experience. I was at low speed turning right onto a roundabout, maybe 15 mph. At the same time as the noise was emitted, the rear of the car jolted as if I'd ridden over a kerb. I looked in my rear view mirror to see what I'd driven over and there was nothing there. It has never jolted before. This is getting very disconcerting, and I'm going to contact my dealer tomorrow.
Has this happened to anybody else? |

It's happening to me I also have an 2016 August build. The noise is coming from the right rear. Took it to the dealer immediately and he said it was rocks, it's really loud but intermittent so of course it didn't do it when they test drove it. I haven't experienced a shudder yet but I only have 3600miles on the odometer. I hope a resolution can be found or someone getting to what's really causing the noise.

I've had the rear 'jolt' quite a few times but mine was a direct correlation to right foot movement.
Still the odd noise from the backing plates. Still frustrating and annoying. If you can reverse when you hear the noise the stones seem to clear quickly. Not a good solution in traffic though. |
